I've tried and tried, I've spent over 35 hours trying to figure out how to install mods on Windows 7. (Not exaggerating!), Watched 20 videos on how to install mods from Fallout: New Vegas from the nexus. Research 4 other different methods of installing mods to FNV. Installed J-zip, 7-Zip, Win.rar, I've gotten advice that I'm not opening the correct programs, or that I'm not using file decrypting software correctly. I've seen a multitude of processes and methods all somewhat the same as to opening Program Files x86 > Steam > Steamapps > common > Fallout New Vegas > Data, and still no luck! Unless, someone can personally come over and install it themselves...anybody live in the state of Ohio? Otherwise, I have no use to ever look at mods again! Not only are they risky and extremely complex, but they obviously require someone with an extensive history and background working with computers at an experience level in which cannot be obtained within a matter of two weeks. Unless some form of "drag-and-drop" software is developed to enable individuals with lifestyles that do not incorporate the use of conversion and file searching that often can install mods as easy as the game itself. So If anybody has a "fool-proof" method they can upload to youtube or something...because I'm pretty d@mn sure I can follow step-by-step info., but there has to be some variable that is NEVER included in every tutorial video. I'm just gonna keep an open mind on the situation, as stubborn as I am to call it quits, I gonna put this on the "back burner" for the sake of sanity!

While we can understand your pain. Tens of thousands of people HAVE been able to get mods to work, and I seriously doubt that you are any dumber than many of them.

The first step is to move the game to a more mod friendly environment - The game engine used was originally written to use WinXP. Microsoft made some changes in the way administrative privilages are NOT given with Vista and WinXP that are not present in WinXP. This results in problems when games - and even some Steam games are installed in the 'default' program files location.

NEVER put a game that is to be modded into the protected 'program files' folders. I recommend a new folder such as C:\Games. then each new game gets it's own folder there. As for steam games. move the steam client there as C:\Games\Steam - here are the instructions direct from the Steam forums.

There is no one and only one way to install mods, You do actually have to have some small (very small) knowledge of file structures to know where to put stuff. And it can be very different for different games. And diferent mods for the same game may install quite differently.

Start simple. ONE mod, that changes ONE small thing - trying to install a complex mod as your first project or trying to install a bunch of mods (to save time) will nearly always result in a failure. Then read the documentation - actually read it not just skim to see what the mod does. There may be some valuable info on installing it there.

Just in case you haven't checked the site - we are working on just what you asked about, a tool to download and install mods that we hope will be simpler Basically one click download, then one click install and one click to uninstall. It will be a little while before it is ready so don't hold your breath, but check back every so often to see what progress has been made.

Start with something simple, I'll use this as an example....

http://www.newvegasnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=34880

Download the Gecko file (second one down) and open it with Winrar, you'll get something like this....

Open your New Vegas Data folder and drag the .esp from Winrar to that folder....

To keep things simple we'll just use the launcher to enable the mod, once you've got the hang of things do install a mod manager, it'll make life a lot easier.

Launch the game and click on Data Files....

Check the box next to the mod name in the box that pops up....

Click OK and run the game, if you go to the docs house you should find a Gecko in there that will follow you around. To get rid of him just uncheck him in the launcher and he'll go away, you'll get a warning when the game starts but you can ignore that.

For files that have textures and meshes the steps are the same, just copy those folders along with the .esp (if it has one, replacers tend not to), you may be asked to merge folders which you should do.

Once again do use a mod manager once you've got the hang of it.
