Dark Souls and Skyrim?

Ive been watching the Dark Souls vs Skyrim argument rage on in other forums for awhile now and Ive never understood it :/ .. What do they have in common besides sword fighting? .. They seem like completely different games to me. Demon souls was a "third" person action adventure with RPG elements and very hardcore combat .. Oblivion was an open world RPG with focus on first person and a lot more going on around the world besides just killing .. So why do people always draw the connection?

This isn't a flame thread on Dark Souls and everyone should remain civil .. You can name your favorite and explain why or maybe explain why they are the same but don't argue with each other over which ever you think sucks.

Edit: Demon/Dark Souls isn't first person.

Wait. A. Second.

Dark/Demon Souls have first person combat? o_O

I thought they were always in third person.

Anyways, on topic.

Skyrim is a open world sandbox game where the player is free to do whatever he wants in a vast and detailed world filled with quests, items, NPC's and tons voiced dialogue. And it also has marriages.

Dark Souls is a very difficult action game, that is based on action. And dying.

I don't know how someone can compare them. It's like comparing Zelda to God of War.

To clarify, I haven't played Dark/Demon Souls (would love to though) so I can't really give detailed feedback.

My favorite is Skyrim, I prefer fantasy (Fairies, dragons, mudcrabs) over darkness and violence.

I don't get it either. Even if both games contain RPG-elements, I really dont think you can compare a sandbox-game with a linear one. Also since Skyrim is mainly focused on first-person gameplay rather than locked third-person. So the two games doesn't even belong to the same genre if you ask me. Same goes with The Witcher 2.

Your probably right about the third person thing <_< .. I guess thats another reason they have nothing in common .. but I seriously see people compare the two constantly

Well, Dark Souls is an extremely hardcore RPG. Skyrim is a pretty casual RPG. Some elitists like to criticize Skyrim for being a game for console kiddies, casuals, etc. while saying that Dark Souls is going to be a really good game. I don't really care, I've got both pre-ordered and am very much looking forward to both of them. I'm playing through Demon's Souls now and it's very fun.

If anything... Skyrim is more like Fable lol. A lot of ignorant people will draw the compassion based on the fact that both games are based on a similar time period. Swords and shields, that jazz. I'm sure both games have their own respective content that will bring me to buy both of them. If nothing more then the fact they aren't shooter games.

I've never understood it either. They're both great games that play completely different and that's that. If you've played Oblivion and Demon's Souls, the difference is obvious. Skyrim has a social aspect and isn't focused completely on combat, Dark Souls is completely about combat and getting your ass handed to you. They are both strong adventuring games. I got both preordered as well and look forward to much adventuring, ass handing, and D&D style questing.

Despite the fact that Dark Souls will have a much larger world than Demon's Souls, it is not an open-world game with many cities, towns, and the freedom to anywhere with no limitations because there's no level-scaling implemented, so you have to progress from area to area in a linear fashion. If you try to stray away from the path the devs laid out for you, you get your arse kicked and you have to back to an area that's more around your level. The devs of Dark Souls said this in an interview, I believe. Not to mention the fact that Skyrim has no multiplayer, while Dark Souls puts quite an emphasis on multiplayer.

I think the games CAN be compared and here is why:

Both are RPG's - Role Playing Games - And i feel that hands down Dark Souls/Demon's Soul's is/will be more immersive. There is something frightening about being alone in the tower of Latria and hearing the sound of a mind flayer ringing that bell. Not once in all of my play though of oblivion did i feel fear. This tells me that FROM's games are more immersive and pull me in in a way the elder scrolls games do not. A bigger world with more things to do does not make it immersive.

Don't you think the main point of an RPG is to be pulled into an alternate reality so convincingly?
