Strobelight
Hey Nexus! I have a desktop computer that was bought for me for my birthday five years ago. Its a DELL VOSTRO 200 and i've never upgraded it once bar putting an extra 1GB Stick of RAM into it. Its an office computer, essentially, so its not designed for games, and I realise that. Hopefully for Christmas i'll be getting the Alienware Aurora! Because of it being low-end, I rarely have more than two games installed at once. I have Amnesia: The Dark Descent installed and then whatever else I play at the time. Mostly either Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas or Oblivion, and whenever I feel like swapping over and playing Oblivion over Fallout, i'll completely uninstall Fallout, along with its saves/data etc. I do this a lot, and have uninstalled, installed, uninstalled, installed Oblivion several times now. I have a hardcopy of the Game of the Year edition, so its a two disc installation. One with the game, one with the official DLC Plugins. Heres my problem: Oblivion, refuses to run. I bring up the launcher, press play, and the black box in the corner comes up as always, as soon as it maximizes I get a pop up saying "Oblivion has encountered a problem and needs to close." I've tried it in windowed mode, and then the same thing happens, although it continues playing through the intro logos in the background as normal? I've tried it in different resolutions and have unchecked 'V-Syncing', although i'm not sure what that is. And I tried the "Fake Fullscreen Windowed Alt+Tab Fix" mod from the TESNexus, to no prevail. I'm stumped, and I REALLY want to get this working again before Skyrim! I'd appreciate any and all help i'll get. I've requested help before and I know how reliable and friendly these forums are. Thanks in advance!
Keirgarth
First off, V-Sync is where the game limits the frame rate to match the refresh rate of your monitor, usually around 60FPS max. That setting should have nothing to do with your issue what so ever. If you have had the game running before, then there should be no issues with running the game now as you have said that you have done very little to upgrade the system. I do have one question though, did you upgrade the ram since the last time you had the game working? If the answer is no, the only possible option would be that something went wrong with the install and you need to try again. If the answer is yes, pull out that ram stick and see how the game performs. You may still have to reinstall once the ram is out due to the possibility of the ram causing corruption in your install. Let us know if that helps at all.
MShoap13
Also, do not run Oblivion windowed. Windows will force some of the games assets into virtual memory (on your HDD) which will then cause the game to crash (the same issue arises from alt + tab). The alt + tab fixer(s) didn't work for me on Win XP x64 so they may only be useful on Vista and/or 7. If you do suspect your RAM is the issue, take out all of the old sticks only leaving the newest one in then download and run memtest+ for an hour or so. It's helpful to run something like Game Booster before starting memtest. It will free up as much memory as possible to be allocated to testing. After three to four passes of memtest (100% = 1 pass) if you haven't received an error you're memory and settings are most likely fine. If you do receive an error first make sure your memory timings match or exceed that stick's recommended timings.
Strobelight
I had actually installed the RAM after I last played Oblivion, so that could be the problem. I will take the stick out and uninstall the game first. If no luck, i'll have to try this memtest+ thing! Thanks

Keirgarth
Strobelight, have you tried to delete the oblivion.ini file in your "My Documents" folder and then try launching the game again? If you had a mod change something in the ini that the game didn't like, this will rebuild the ini when the game is launched again.
