Vagrant0
Its not always nessecarily quicker, but definatly safer. Not safe... Or havn't you been paying attention. Given the latest actions by MPAA, you probably shouldn't use even legal torrents in america any more. Basically, if you download through torrents or P2P, you will be tracked by these agencies. I've been getting hits from some of these companies even on 100% legal torrents lately. So I've stopped. Even though I'm not participating in illegal matters, there doesn't seem to be much one can do to prove their case after the ISP has been shut down and the computer confiscated by the police. I may be overreacting (just like they want) but quite frankly, I don't want to take the chance durring this season of witch hunting.

Septim741
I never knew torrents were legal. Personally, I avoid them, because I don't particularly trust them, seeing as they are used a lot in illegal downloads. Also, you can never be sure what you're really downloading. ;)
Abramul
Downloading certain types of file from an FTP server would be illegal. Doesn't have any bearing on the legality of FTP. As for reliability, if you're not sure if a source is reliable, find a hash of whatever file you're looking for. This applies not just to the chaotic hodge-podge of P2P, but also to servers controlled by party you aren't certain you can trust.

Looking at the number of seeders can also point out if the torrent is bad (since people aren't going to seed something that doesn't work or gives them a virus.) Most torrents I've used have been safe, but again I don't download illegal software or movies, so can't really say what's safe over there. Personally, I'd be more concerned about being tracked if I did than if I was going to be caught by a bad file. Even with good online security, you'll be tracked, and your IP possibly reported to your ISP.
