Well it dosent active with cast on self spells if it did it would be way to easy to have infinite magicka, it dosent absorb reflected spells either, and last i checked there wernt any NPCs that cast healing spells on you, also i have NEVER had it absorb the "Restore Attributes" you get from shrines tho i did have it absorb Vivics Blessing once wich was really odd.

That's wierd. It's always absorbed positive spells with me (even cast on self ones), especially the ones from imperial altars and such.

Well what i know is my mage trained with cast on self spells and they were never absorbed, even at 100% spell absorbtion 50 from Antroch, 25 from Necromancers Amulet, 25 From enchanted exquisite shirt/pants/belt/rings and you can easily tell when a spell is absorbed because there is a whiteflash thing that goes off infront of you.

Magatsu: You betcha, it gives you a inate 50% chance to completly negate any spell cast at you.

Visited the temple today to get my stats restored - stupid bonewalkers - I absorbed almsivi intervention, wich was nice cause i was down to 8 magicka but my strength/endurance were still red so i figured what the heck cast a restore strength and restore endurance spell on myself and then did almsivi restoration again, it maxed out my magicka supply. 280 magicka restored for 70gold works for me ^_^ hmm Mark, Almsivi Intervention, Almsivi Restoration, Recall that could be a much better strategy then Ancestral Ghosts I thinks dont have to worry about losing health, and its faster too, not to mention that enchanting Mark/Recall/Amsivi Intervention amulets isent that expensive and you can also find those amulets in smugglers caves as random loot.

Also looking over switcs post Almsivi Restoration and such are actualy on Touch spells so technicaly your not casting them the shrine is. but casting something like waterwalking on self or hearth heal has still never restored my magicka.

Just so there is no confusion, here is how the spell absorption on The Atronach birth sign works:

You have 50% chance to absorb any spell cast at you by someone or something other than yourself. This is ALL spells, including spells that would benefit you. So, for example, if an NPC cast a heal spell on you, you could absorb it. It even includes spells on weapons that enemies hit you with, such as a dagger that casts paralysis.

Spells you cast on yourself are never absorbed. This includes spells on items you are using.

Altars and shrines count as something other than yourself, so you can absorb their effects. This is very handy for recovering magicka. However, the way altars and shrines work is a bit different. Normally, when you absorb a spell it has not effect on you. But from my experience with Imperial Cult altars, I ALWAYS absorb the spell and the spell ALWAYS effects me at the same time. This is certainly true with the "Restore Attributes" effect, I am not sure about the others.

Also note that you will never absorb a spell that does not hit you directly. For example: If an NPC casts a fireball at you that has a large area of effect, then you will only absorb the fireball if it hits you head on. If the fireball hits the wall next to you then you will not absorb the effect and you will be caught in the blast radius, probably suffering damage. For this reason, if you have The Atronach sign it is often safer to take your chances with the spell absorption rather than try and dodge the spell, UNLESS you have plenty of room and time to move. This also means that having an NPC companion can actually make things harder rather than easier, since the Storm Atronach might lightning him rather than you, catching you in the blast.
