Very Strange Bug

I'm playing on vanilla Oblivion, (tried playing with the unofficial patch + supplements, and operation optimization to no avail) and after playing for about 2-3 minutes, the game gets laggy. It starts out fine, can run it on fullest specs as well as it runs on lowest specs, but after a while of the game running it begins to lag. I have tried everything setting related, but it happens even on the lowest setting. This is happening even if the game is idle. I can be sitting still and after a minute or two it begins to lag.

Nothing outside of Oblivion is interfering with it.

Specs:

Radeon HD 5850

8 GB RAM

AMD Athlon X2 260

Windows 7

Steam version of Oblivion

EDIT: Wrong section- could have sworn I had posted Technical Support. :|

EDIT:EDIT: Thanks for moving this!

I have to ask: why are you using Operation Optimisation with those specs and a vanilla game? Get rid of OO and see if that helps.

I installed OO thinking it'd fix the problem. It's not currently installed, but I'm still getting the bug.

What other processes are running in the background? Things like messengers, antivirus, browsers... anything really, should be closed when playing graphic intensive games like Oblivion. If you are running vanilla Oblivion with those specs and are getting bad stutter, there MUST be something running in the background that's causing it.

If you are seeing a lot of hard drive thrashing at the same time - more possibilities

Windows Indexing service deciding to index while you are playing. Disable the indexing service - This was mostly an XP thing though.

Some defrag progs will automatically defrag when it reaches a certain percentage, Disable defrag while playing.

Heavily fragmented drive - run defrag before starting game & see if it helps.

Not enough space on Hard drive. - Take out the trash.

Anti virus checking every read and every write to hard drive - change AV preferences to exempt game folders from this.

Not enough ram - yes, you may have 8G, but by default the game only uses 2G (actually less than that) get and use 3G enabler - run it once and it will allow the game to use more ram - up to 3GB on a 32 bit system. Possibly more on a 64 bit.

And, go to this site for help on tweaking your computer, video card & games to work much better.

http://www.tweakguides.com/

Use the tweaks for your system first, then the ones for your video, and finally for each game you use.
