No Mods Will Work

So I opened Fallout 4 after not playing it for a few months and noticed that literally none of my mods are active anymore. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling them, figuring out if the load order was wrong, and nothing seems to work. What am I doing wrong?

A recent update changed how mods are loaded.

Your plugin.txt needs to and an * in front of all mods.

For example:

*Mod0.esm

*Mod1.esp

*Mod2.esp

NMM and Bethesda.net both take care of it for you. Or should. I don't use either.

Same here, as far as mods no longer working. Made the edits required in the fallout4 sub-directory containing plugin.txt, but still no joy. The game worked fine yesterday but today, zilch. Deinstalled and reinstalled FO4 from Steam, of course rebooted a couple of times. The problem started coincident with my playing around with Snap n Build 1.9, as I had been using an earlier version. Related to my problem? I don't know. If anybody else is having a problem that might be related to mine, I'd sure like to hear about it. Hate to think I'm just dragging my knuckles on the floor and stepping on my fingers as the only monkey in the zoo not smart enough to figure out the problem.

The mods don't work again. Upon firing up the game this morning, things were just as bad as they were before editing the plugins.txt file and seeing it work yesterday. That file appears to be ignored now. Reinstalled the mods using NMM but still no joy. I'm about done with this game.

The file probably got overwritten again. That can happen when you launch the game with the normal game launcher instead of F4SE, which circumvents the launcher and skips the entire thing to boot directly into the game. Or in other words, make sure you have F4SE installed and use only that to launch your game. Or just make the changes again, save it and save a backup of it and once that's done set the file to read only. That should do the trick as well.If you did all that and this still happens, make sure that you are using the latest version of NMM. The two or so versions before that randomly disabled mods whenever you looked at them the wrong way.

Is this the only solution? I tried getting the latest release of Mod Organizer 2 to work on my system, but it still apparently doesn't play with Windows 7x64, making it another in a long line of mod manager lemons.

I'm totally fed up with this game. I can't enable any mods, and nothing works. The plugins file is a nightmare to manage, and frequently seems to reset itself. Has *anyone* come up with a reliable mod manager yet? I'm almost at the uninstall point, which is sad considering how excited I was about this game just a month ago...

Absolutely the same problem! But that's yesterday's nice to work with mods, and today, coming home from work and running the game, I catch the first crash! Then the next, start a new game, a start again as soon as you touch Shaun! Fix the damn problem finally. This is repeated for the second time after the patch 1.5!

Reapply the mods with the * in the plugins file and save again, but keep the plugins.txt file open in notepad while starting up the game. This seems to be the only thing keeping my plugins file from being overwritten even in read-only and the only way I've been able to play with my mods now.
