ginnyfizz
Because mostly, organisers of legit demos make arrangements with the local authorities and police departments so that public inconvenience can be kept to a minimum. Protests I have been on have always done that. March, and then move on. Have a rally that lasts a limited time. Don't set up a midden in a public park, like this shower have done. That said, getting a new job IS easier said than done and I know that only too well, but the point is I am at my PC applying online, on the phone, networking. These protestors can't even be trying, they are just on their jollies.

If part of your protest is about going against the government, the police department probably won't care too much for it.
ginnyfizz
We were going against the Government of the time when I got a police baton around my head, marharth. We had permission for our demo and all arranged with the police, and every intention of moving away when we had done a bit of shouting and placard waving. Along the route we had shaken hands with and applauded the firefighters who were also in dispute with the Government at the time. But for some reason, probably because the Almighty Bliar adjourned to the bathroom when he saw how many of us there were questioning his divine judgment, all of a sudden, the police turned ugly and my evening ended in the local emergency department. So there, marharth, we had police intervening to actively cause trouble at a totally peaceful demo, and shortly after that, a law was brought in prohibiting demos in Parliament Square, just in case thousands of people decided to shout " @:;$%!(s to Blair" again. The difference with the OWS rabble is that they have no permissions and have in fact been requested to leave, but have not done so. By their own admission in some cases there has been violence on their side.

If police can just turn on you when they want, getting permission won't make much difference. Also you were protesting a hunting law right? It is a bit different if you are protesting something that could change the entire government and effect the leaders of the city.
