a way to get past level 53.5 on oblivion.....

Actually 255 is not the limit for level, it is the limit for skills, however 100 is the game limit for skills, and once your there you can not advance your level without cheating, I am currently at 257 for my level.

I used the console command

modpca luck # where # gets the skill down to a small number, the max luck level is 255, and if you go past that it starts a 0 again. once I had my luck at a small number I typed the console command

advlevel

this brings up the level up screen, and the level advances, you have to have a skill that you can advance, once the skills reach 100 you can not advance anymore. but you can use the modpca <skill> # to change it back under 100.

I just did this last night, and as I said I got my level to 257, I wanted to know if the limit was 255 or not, and I know its beyond 255 since I am at 257.

I use the

modpca SKILL # to get the skills up to 255 which is the limit, the game limit is 100, and I notice that 255 does have an effect, I see it in strength being abe to carry 1200 lbs of equipment, with it at a 100 I can only carry 750 or so.

I can use the console command

modpcs Blade # to cheat those up to 255 as well, this is for the stuff on the page for stuff like handtohand, mysticism, destruction, and such.

Just a silly old man's question but do you do all of this as a kind of lark or is this part of the way you play or is it just for fun because its one of those things you can do? To my way of thinking

it looks like a lot of work for little gain. I use a level slowing MOD and my character is better 1 or 3 or even 3 to my 1 so I don't need to cheat like this. The worst sin for me is keeping the difficulty

slider at about mid way. I am thinking that if you want to play max difficulty then you need to increase your skills. For this old guy normal difficulty is fine as my reflex's just ain't what they usta be :-)

The premise behind the 0-255 leveling (for anything) is that numbers between 0 and 255 (256 numbers) is represented as a single byte. If you have a skill at 0, the game stores it as 00000000, if the skill is 255, the game stores it as 11111111. Plus, there's everything in between, such as your level 50 blade is stores as 00110010. Bearing this in mind, to have any value (for skills) over 255, it would have to be stores as 2 bytes. The game does not allocate 2 bytes of memory to your stats, so once it goes over 255 (11111111) it resets at 0 (00000000) and starts counting up again.

Yeah I am just playing around with the levels to see how it effects the game, my character was stuck at one, I have a healling spell that I use rather than a bed, and a few quest require higher levels, so I just figured out how to advance the level without sleeping, the top number of the level is not 255, I cheated it up to 367, just for the hell of it, not sure how level effects the play, I think the skills affect the play, just what quest you do.

I played Oblivion straight when I first played it, a lot things you have to do to increase your skills get pretty tedious and it took 6 months to complete, and its frustrating cause you really never get a lot of money so your broke all the time. I am playing it again, and really not that serious, I am trying new things and have incorporated a lot mods to make it more fun, and I have a lot money so I can buy all the cool stuff.

There are a lot things you can add, I added Rhianna, a companion I found on this site, and really love her, I added an animal, but found it died easily and really upset me. Rhianna is much better, she is a goddess and I have had her die yet. though I have only had her a couple days.

The game changes as the level changes, the armour and weapons become dwarf and elven made, and you really need that because the enemy's increase you see some some really scary monsters with the higher levels. The game is set up so that you really don't get past about 55 levels with out cheating it. I am seeing stuff I had not seen until the end of the game, now. I have to admit keeping the level low has some advantages, I can keep my character in sexy outfits when she fights and that has some advantages.

People who use the detail type leveling are like the people I used to jog with who used a stopwatch. Doing either to me takes much of the fun out of the game. I would suggest you try a couple of things.

1. If you do the power leveling as I gather from your post the act of leveling becomes more important than playing the game and yet you seem to like a certain amount of role playing. I did that and I did not like the way I was playing. I got a level slowing MOD that lets you slow your leveling from 2 to 5 times slower. The only thing that the MOD does is SLOW the leveling from 2 to 5 times slower. I did this because no matter how much I power leveled the NPC's were better than me and it was hard going. So you might try it

2. Because of the slow leveling I added a Quest item MOD that will raise the stats on a quest reward item as you gain levels so that say you kill Umbra at a low level as you gain levels it gets better.

3. As for the money well Your not doing something right because you should reach a point where you have more than enough. This does require a little plaaning such as picking up a lot of small light weight stuff like arrows and after you get a item to help you pick locks you pick up all of the lock picks you can and sell them Why you ask? Its not the amount of money you can get the will increase your skill with merchants but the NUMBER of items you sell. 50 arrows will increase your merchant dealings than that one big piece of armor. If this is a bit to much trouble then just use a cheat code and give your guy a lot of money and be done with it.

4. as for sexy outfits (LOL) well....How well you are protected is to me more important than how good you look. Better to be a ugly live hero than a dead sexy one :-). My guy looks like he bought his stuff at goodwill with some NotN,and various special enchanted items. What is important is how well he is protected but to each his own.

5. Lastly I would say to just play the game and try to just enjoy the experience and have a good time.

Thanks for the help a lot of great advice, especially about selling lots of stuff. I tended to hord the arrows and lock picks, never could have enough arrows or lock picks. Though I am finding stuff that would have really helped me the first time around, like hot keys. I seem to have missed that the first time around for some reason, and the Zoom on the Bow with right click. It would have made me a lot better.

As far as looking good or having good armor, If I was playing a guy that would be cool, heavest armor I could find, however I tend to play these types of games as a female, I like the eye candy and that tends to keep me playing the games. However your right about protecting the character, and I have found some mods that have sexy armor outfits.

As far as levels, I really don't care, I just raised the levels to see how far I could go. I had found that the cheat took some figuring out, and once I figured it out went on to see what the maximum was, when I first played it they were very important. On my second go round I am keeping the level low, by not sleeping and will raise for the quest that require it, now that I figured out how to control the levels. I really raised the levels to see how high they go, and how the game changed, it really does not change after your past 50. The monsters and money don't really change after 50, I have not bothered to see if the limit 511, I just know its not 255. The really high level game I am not playing now, I went back to my low level game, that is the nice thing about being able to save your game.

Better to be a ugly live hero

i disagree i think that it is important to have acharacter that looks good if you didn't you would soon loose interest and the enjoyment you get from playing oblivion would be lost.

also, i dont ever get my character to high levels for the sake of it the highest level character ive had is my level 35 argonian warrior (he' level 33 in this link) and that was without cheating in anyway (using mods or codes) i only used the official downloadable content, knights of the nine, and shivering isle, the reason i posted this is because i was curious to find out if you could get past level 53.5.

Well it was not men to upset you just a little humor. I did not mean it like that. We do agree on keeping your character level down, I found with my first several characters no matter how I developed them or what skills I choose I would get to about level 30 and things would get to hard for me. That is why I use a level slowing MOD because it fits my style better and the last game I did just about everything and was A LEVEL 30 i THINK. T ill I read your post I never thought about what my character looked like. I have always wanted to get the armor I want and enchant it myself but I found that the only good things to use were the segil stones (late game item) our the better soul gems (hard to find early on) so I use items that offer enchantments and don't look to bad. I think when I finish this character I will try a game in which I do the main quest first then I can enchant my own stuff. I just wonder if the game will be interesting to me doing it this way. I think so as I enjoy just doing the guild quests and exploring. I think I might add some other quests to make it more interesting.
