Hi,

if you want to upgrade your cpu and graphic card you can have a very powerful system by upgrading to a better graphic card and a cpu. A 12MB quad is the high end one, if you ask me it doesnt matter which one you choose, you can overclock it. And of course it would bring a lot of calculation power, a 9550 is nice and not that expansive. For the graphic card i would go for a 560 (not ti, if you want to save money), here in germany the prices dont differ that much. You could also have a look at the amd hd 6850, which is a little cheaper but has the same power like the 460. But, please mind, have a look if your motherboard could handle the cpu and your psu could handle the whole system ;)

The biggest problem I see here is that the core 2 quad will bottleneck most of the strong graphics cards. I'd say no stronger than a Radeon HD 6850, maybe a 6790, or a GTX 460, 550TI. Most GTX 500 and HD 6900 cards will be too fast and have to wait for the CPU to catch up.

Ti is short for Titianium, the 560 ti is around 10% more powerful than the 560. Thats the reason why they have different prices ;)

I don't think a core 2 quad will bottleneck a 6850. I own myself a C2Q 9450, which is overclocked to 3.6GHz, it is more powerful like a i7 920. At the moment i'm planning to upgrade my Amd hd 4870 to a 6950 and the cpu is powerful enough. If he wants to have a "cheap" upgrade a quad will provide enough power for a 6850. In my opinion he could run the system for more than a year to enjoy games in a nice graphic quality.
