Oblivion crappy performance on good machine

I have a ATI HD Radeon 5970 2gb, Intel core i7 960 3,20 GHz, 8 GB RAM, Windows 7 professional. And im only getting between 10-30 fps in the game. I have tried literally every optimization, performance booster, ini tweak etc available. I have no high-rez texture packs although I do have the "Really textured normal maps" pack. With these specs shouldn't I be getting at least 30-40 fps? Here is my modlist.

Unfortunately, it's nothing to do with specs. It's the Gamebryo engine. You could have the best PC in the world and it wouldn't guarantee good performance. On the other hand, I have a fairly mid-range system and I get amazing performance. It's just luck really.

I can make you a mod in a few minutes which brings every PC on it's knees. Looking at the long list of mods, how many of them do you think are performance killers?

IIGaneshaII, I didn't intend to prolong yet another discussion about FPS. THere are already many very informative ones, like what-framerate-do-you-play-at. I simply could not resist responding to these simplifying statements "it's Gamebryo".

 

No, it's not Gamebryo. Gamebryo works pretty good for vanilla Oblivion. And, Bethesda design goal has never been to ship a game which literally supports 100s of high-spec mods, without any substantial penalty. Mods mostly made by non-professionals, many of them not caring about the integration of their upload together with other mods in abundance.

 

For me it's a miracle that, that Oblivion together with all the mods in your list is still functioning. At least parially at a framerate (30) at which you watch movies on TV. :)

What fps were you getting before piling on the mods? Without knowing that it's hard to say what is causing your poor performance.

 

Start with a clean game, NO mods. Be sure it is patched to latest version.

Go through this guide http://www.tweakguides.com/

Be sure to follow his advice about tweaking your system first, then the video card, and last the game.

Now check fps in some of the worst locations - such as the Imperial City Market district at around noon. (make a save there for future reference.)

What it does is close most of the background processes you are running when you play, freeing up more resources for the game.

Have you applied the 4gb Patch? Some of the mods you have installed are particularly RAM intensive, and this patch will lift Oblivion's RAM cap from 2gb to 4gb. Literally doubled my FPS. Note; this only works on 64 bit operating systems.

 

With all the performance-killing mods you use (Better Cities, Natural Environments, Unique Landscapes...), even 4gb of RAM won't be enough. Dedicate a USB memory device to Ready Boost to further improve performance. An 8gb device should be plenty, but do your homework and buy the one with the fastest read/write times you can find.

 

Also make sure to add the Oblivion exe to your antivirus' list of trusted applications, and set to not scan files on access. Vanilla Oblivion resources are compressed archives, and your antivirus will only scan an archive the first time it's accessed. Mods are non-compressed non-archive files, and the AV will scan them everytime the game needs to access them (which, in the case of Natural Environments and Unique Landscapes, Is nearly constantly), causing a large drop in performance.

 

Another great thing to do to boost FPS is to tweak the following lines in the Oblivion ini;

uGridDistantTreeRange and uGridDistantCount

i have them both set to 9. this will reduce the ammount of the surrounding environment that the game displays, greatly improving performance.

 

Just incase you think i may not know what i'm talking about, i get 15-25 FPS in most outdoor environments on a laptop with no dedicated graphics card (Intel HD Graphics), with this load order

Try the Oblivion Stutter Remover mod and apply the 4 gb patch to oblivion.exe.

Ok im here to help on any forum i can find about enhancing oblivion fps and performance. People keep doing .ini tweaks and getting performance enhancer mods. For some this works. For others it does very little. I am one of them. Theres a misconception that oblivion engine is faulty and that is not true. Gamebryo (oblivions engine) is well made and balanced. The down side is its cpu intensive. Theres no multi thread problem and most of what people say is not true. If you computer meets the minimum requirements to run oblivion you good to go but theres one thing people are not seeing. With my fair bit of computer knowings and the help of a faimly friend who builds computers and is a programmer. We found out that most of the time with oblivion performance issues and .ini tweaks with performance enhancer mods not working is a buss problem (a buss is the system that transfers data between components in a computer).Its probably not fast enough to handle the flow of data or something is bogging it down and unless your a computer expert DO NOT MESS WITH A BUSS. i warned you. I hope this helps and im sorry but if you cant get oblivion to run smooth no matter what you try you just have to deal with it or buy a computer with a fast buss.This applies to any game. It all depends on how to game runs.
