elvinkun
Hello there...I just noticed, that my knowledge of HW is stuck in 2005, so I wondered, if I could get opinions of others on a PC I found and consider buying.I just mostly wonder what you think about the CpU and the graphic card, and how it all could work together. PowderdToastMan
That intel 2500 sandy bridge, despite being the god of gaming processors, has reported problems with the new sandforce controllers that the new ssd's use. There are rumors that it might be in the chipset required for that processor. If you plan getting an ssd, consider that this cpu will have a higher likleyhood of bsod's. The ge force is good but it sucks power like you would not believe. make sure you got a good power unit. Erik005
The videocard is very low end but the processor is good. Don't worry about the ssd thing just get a crucial m4 it doesn't have that problem.
RitualBlack
I agree with Erik005, the video card should be changed out for a higher performance one. You could probably find a good replacement using the http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html chart. If you want a good card that doesn't break the bank you could get the Radeon HD 6850 for a MSRP of $149.99. It may be a bit pricey but the performance you would get is much better and definitely a justified cost. You also could go for a lower model like the 6750 which would also be good and probably just over $100 with tax. It is up to you, but you are putting good parts in your computer, and the gpu is the only thing that would hold you back while playing games. You have a nice cpu, 8 gb of ram is perfect, and a large 7200 rpm hard drive so why not go the little bit extra and "future proof" a bit . Good luck and I am sure you will enjoy whatever computer you end up building or buying :)
N3C14R
I agree, the processor is good but the videocard is slooow. And 3gb on a gt545? WTF was the gpu manufacturer thinking? The gt545 is barely able to utilize 1gb most of the time yet alone 3gb (unless you're running multiple high resolution monitors, but even then 3gb is still excessive). Swap the gt545 out for a gtx560 ti, hd6950, or equivalent. You WON'T regret it. Edited October 23, 2011 by N3C14R
Erik005
The 3gb is just marketing, 3gb is handy with 3d gaming but the card isn't even good enough for regular gaming.
CommanderCrazy
As stated many times before, not that GPU. Switch it out for something like a 560, 560ti (slightly better), or an AMD 6950 / 70. If you stay with that 545, it will bottleneck the rest of the PC. elvinkun
Thanks a lot for the input, the marketing sure worked for me and you have to admit, the GPU looks kinda cool, untill you dig a bit deeper. But it really seems, that for only a little bit more money, one could get a lot more performance. So thanks again for the warning. And just by the way, do you think there is any point in getting more than 8 GB RAM at this time and place? RitualBlack
Glad this thread was useful to you :). I wouldn't go over 8gb ram at the moment, but I am sure there are people who would have a reason why its important you might want to  . Since you have a desktop you can always upgrade the ram a few years down the road when its needed.
hoofhearted4
nah, youll be all set with 8gb. most everyone only ever uses 8....though RAM is cheap, not like youd be spending tons on putting it to 16gb, though again, no reason to do so, put that money into your GPU :)
