My game keeps freezing

Hello,

recently, my game has begun freezing and lagging. Doesn't matter what I do, it happens. Just now, I tried resuming the game from my last save (quicksave) and it took about three seconds for a ctd. Tried it again, freeze. Couldn't dismount from my horse, nor enter any menus or look around/move.

Only solution: task manager.

Or it simply stutters- freezes for just a few seconds while sound continues - and causes me to lose fights because I can't defend/fight properly.

I've recently deleted about 40-50 mods (some of which might still be on my pc somewhere as zip or rar-files). I deleted all those mods with NMM, using the option "uninstall/delete from all profiles”. Neither of those mods is shown in the NMM menu or in LOOT.

I also downloaded a few more, but I've run Loot (no warnings or dirty plugins) and I've started a new game as well.

Since I'm using Alternate Start, maybe you'll need the start option I chose. This time, I chose the vanilla start. After a few reloads, the start sequence worked just fine.

I have the latest Version of SKSE installed. I use LOOT and NMM to sort my Mods and TES5Edit to clean the files if LOOT wants me to.

In total, I have 154 plugins, 153 of those active (except Skyrim.esm apparently). I have 156 mods in total, all installed. 150 of these are activated and only those 150 are in the load order/bashed patch.

how I created my bashed patch (not so sure whether you'll need this, but just in case):

=> Error: 104 68 dragonborn with lute.esp; could not be merged into the bashed patch (I'm assuming I can ignore this, because all it means is that the mod is not part of the bashed patch)

The following .esp files had an orange check mark rather than a green one, because of a different order of the plugin's masters:

22 16 Dragon Combat Overhaul.esp

40 28 RSChildren_PatchUSKP.esp

70 46 Immersive Patrols II.esp

112 70 Nock2Tip.esp

128 80 Frontier Fortress Notice Boards.esp

151 97 da_alternate_start_extension.esp

I did not uncheck any of them and build the patch with them included. I also did not uncheck any other file. Was that correct?

When creating the Bashed Patch (using WryeSmash 305(Standalone)), I check-marked

-Merge Patches

-Import: properties

-Import: names

-leveled lists

As a side note: In NMM in the Plugins Menu, can I now uncheck every plugin that was merged into the bashed patch? (Skyrim.esm is already unchecked...I did not do that, btw). And what does it mean, that every plugin, except SkyUI.esp, RaceMenu.esp and RaceMenu Plugin.esp (black), and Skyrim.esm (unchecked, grey) is colored orange? Anything I need to worry abput? The font, I mean, not the background.

(I have not created any merged Patches with TES5Edit, since I have no idea how to recognize the files I shouldn't include in NMM. Any advice on that?)

I am relatively sure, as with so many problems, that this is a "problem exists between chair and screen"-type of problem, but as I am not very well versed when it comes to technical things, I am asking here. Because I have no idea what I have done wrong.

Would it help if I did a complete clean re-install of the game and the mods I want to use? (Or just the game?) If yes, how do I do it? I tried to do that before and ended up having to ask steamsupport for help because my game wouldn't re-install (expired cd-key or something).

Thank you all for your consideration.

EDIT: I also got this message a few times:

"Skyrim doesn't work.

-stop programm. Warning, unsaved content will be lost

-wait until it starts working again"

EDIT: following an advice from

Suvanto, I manually changed load order in NMM of the Real Shelter plugins: Real Shelter.esp after daymol.esm and RSPatch.esp right above Bashed Patch, 0.esp

Thank you!

I can spot one common problem from there. Your Real Shelter files are in wrong order. LOOT does not yet place them correctly.

Try the following.

Real Shelter.esp after daymoyl.esm.

RSPatch.esp right above Bashed Patch, 0.esp

Thank you. Trying it out right away. Does that mean I have to do this everytime after running LOOT? (Not a big problem, just wondering). Also, rebuild bashed patch?

Yes, unless you make exceptions for it. I just move those files manually.

I do hope that this solves your problem. I will sign in tomorrow to see if it did.

It didn't, unfortunately, but it's good to know that I've got those files in order now. One quick LOOT question: unless I add, delete or update mods, I won't need to run LOOT every time, right? And I won't have to rebuild the bashed patch when I change the load order, right? Only when I add/delete/update mods?

EDIT: just noticed it now, I can't even start the game anymore. Or, I can start, but when I load a save (not even the current one, but the one before that, an auto-save) the game kicks me out, usually when the loading screen is still there. I get this message:

"Skyrim doesn't work.

-stop programm. Warning, unsaved content will be lost

-wait until it starts working again"

I actually had that message a few times before I changed the load order, so I don't think it has anything to do with that. Just forgot adding it in the initial post, sorry. Will do so now.

Before you continue, it might be best that you make sure that your official master files are not damaged. Try to verify the integrity of game cache with cleared appcache folder.

I would also recommend that you backup your configuration files to another folder and redo them as well.

If this process does not fix the problem, then at least we know that this is not related to broken master files, or messed up configuration files. Validating files is equal method to reinstalling the game and can even be more through. Full reinstall is usually only required, if you have third party files in your game folders and you can not track them down.

I have posted instructions to Steam forums. They are also available there from pinned topic Player spreadsheet, if you need to find them again later.

I am very curious about "expired CD-key" problem. I have never heard about such thing before. If the game is correctly added to your Steam account, then it should be permanently available for you.

Bottom line is that you should not need to use CD or key to reinstall the game. It should be available for you from Steam servers. If there is some confusion, then make sure to discuss the matter with Steam support. They can see the date and method the game was added to your library.

Thanks for the advice. Doing it now. That means running loot again, right? BTW, if I do not change add or delete/update any mods, do I always have to sort my load order each session? And what about the bashed patch? Rebuild?

(No, thinking back, it wasn't the CD-Key that was the problem. I had made the mistake of deinstalling steam, too and then I stupidly forgot my logindata, since I had never needed to use it. That was the problem. Not the key. That was only because I tried to get it validated for a different steam account. Which, of course, didn't work.)

@Theninjaguy2 Thank you for the advice. I got the program.

No, I did not delete any mods during a playthrough. However, I did not rebuild the bashed patch later on in the game. The old patch was not activated, however. Still, could that have worsened the problem?

Heads up: started a new game. Seems fine so far (still in Helgen), although it did CTD twice. But at least, no stuttering/freezing...yet.

EDIT: Theres another problem that keeps bugging me:

Both Hunterborn and Real Shelter don't seem to recognize Frostfall (version 3.0.3).

Hunterborn doesn't have "Frostfall loaded" toggled in it's compability section and Real Shelter "Cannot Detect Real Shelter: Frostfall" in it's options menu in the mcm.

Frostfall itself does seem to be running just fine, though.

Well, scratch that. The Game freezes and CTDs and stutters. :(
