angelfenriz
Alright this may not seem very Skyrim related but to me, it very much is. For me Skyrim is it! I have waited for the next TES like everyone else for years. So obviously when it comes out I will be spending countless hours in front of the screen. I have slowly been upgrading components and tweaking my system for the upcoming release. I got my pc to where I wanted it and hooked it up to a 40" Samsung 1080p t.v. Awesome right? At first I thought so but now I'm not so sure. I had played the 360 a lot on the t.v. with no issues but as I have been playing Oblivion on the pc at 1920x1080p...To my horror my eyes feel like they are being stabbed by ice picks and they bother me constantly. So I set out on the quest for knowledge why this was happening and I believe I have gotten close but I'm still not positive. At first I spent countless hours tweaking the options on the t.v. Backlight, contrast, sharpness ect. It helped none. I hung a light behind the t.v. and it didn't help. I also sit far enough away from the screen so I know I'm not sitting to close we measured the distance to be sure. (My prescription is up to date too so don't say go see the doctor please) I kept researching more and discovered (or I believe I have discovered the culprit) I turned down the resolution and my eyes felt better almost instantly but it still bothers me to look at the screen. I think it is a combination of 60hz refresh rate and the resolution combined causing me issues. So I watched the skyrim trailer in hd with a lower resolution and it does not look near as good  How am I going to play skyrim in all it's full hd glory and not fry my eyes? Will getting a actual monitor that is 1080p with a faster refresh rate help you think? If so I would still like a decent size screen 24" to 27" would probably get it. I'm worried about the screen size and it still hurting my eyes though. I don't want to get a 27" and it still be unplayable. I have been looking at the asus 2ms screens. I would think that my larger tv is 5ms to 7ms which is said to not be the best for gaming anyways. On my 40" mmorpg's are unplayable in most cases because at the highest resolution the text is painfully small. So if I get a smaller screen I know I'll be sitting closer too. :psyduck: Right now I hooked up the smaller monitor again 17" 1280x1024 75hz and it is much better. Any advice would be completely appreciated and may be I can save someone else the same mistake. Edited October 23, 2011 by angelfenriz
Balagor
I think you are getting close to the answer your self; a smaller monitor. Jezz, 40" my tv is only 32", and I sit 8 feet away from it. You should sit at least 10-12 feet away from this monitor, due to the light. As a monitor I have a 24" and I sit 3 feet away from it. It is just bearable for my eyes
angelfenriz
Alright I think we got it figured out. It wasn't just me, I did a test with a few other people and it hurt their eyes too. Certain games are worse than others and oblivion is one of the ones that is bad. I went to the doctor even though I'm up to date on my prescription, he said my eyes were perfectly healthy and everything was okay. He said it sounded like a focusing issue. I went home and tried a few other things and still had problems, so I turned it back to 1920x1080p. Out of sheer exasperation I got about three feet away and I was fine? It makes sense now because when I used to played on a old 32" I sat only a few feet away. Of course that was a old tube tv and not hd. I feel silly sitting that close to a huge screen so I went ahead and got a 23" Asus monitor and I hope that fixes all the issues  . I think it depends on the person really so if you ever get eyestrain try different things there are very mixed answers online about viewing distance and eye health. Rennn
Try turning down the brightness, and if that makes it look too dim, turn up the contrast slightly (very slightly). I get headaches (or used to, rather) from looking at my monitor for too long, and it was always a little too harsh to be comfortable. Last week I turned down the brightness substantially, bumped the contrast a little, and now the headaches are a distant, quickly fading memory. true highlander
Just in case you don't know: old CRT (cathode ray tube) tvs etc will definitely kill/weaken your eyes at close distances when stared at for hours whilst gaming, the 5-10+lbs of lead on the inside of the 'tube' screen was meant to help lessen the visual deterioration for consumers... A while ago when I was desperate for a replacement monitor I got a perfectly functional (& free) 15 year old professional 19in monitor from a senior fellow at my work that cost almost as much as an entry level car at the time and almost weighed the same, I had it recycled in short order. Axelrod
My apologies, as this is a bit off topic, but also pertaining to the monitor problem. I have a 22' Vizio monitor, with a max resolution of 1920 x 1080. When I have it set at said resolution, about 1 cm of either edge is cut off. This was not the case when I first bought the monitor. I've tried adjusting the horizontal size, but to no avail. Anybody have any tips for me? I've looked everywhere..

Something similar happened to me and it turned out I had to fix it on the t.v. itself and not the nvidia control panel. Somebody changed something with the remote on accident. Have you tried that? Back to the opI got a new monitor, and not only does it look better than the 40" it is much, much easier on the eyes. Problem solved.
