So we see trains and tracks all over the Commonwealth. I think it'd be cool if we could get a mod that allowed us to not only fix the train tracks, and clean up the cars, but actually have a train running through the common wealth. A sort of immersive fast travel system that requires us to build and fix up the trains.

Cool idea. I reckon an underground metro that operates in a straight line would be quite achievable. Turning that main North to South exterior line into a working railroad would be a lot of effort, and from what little I know of creation kit, an absolute b&@*$ trying to get a car to animate properly along the track. You'd also ideally need to replace the "broken" bits of track (which includes bends) with fixed up versions, and that would effectively change the layout. You've also got crazy gradients like Graygarden. Anyone who undertakes it would be crazy, but amaze-balls if they actually did it. The metro thing would be simpler. But Far Harbour DLC (the moving boat) does hint at the possibility with train objects. I might experiment with it, but yeah, it's quite a lot of work, but I agree immersive trains would be great. Maybe something a bit like that mod for Fallout NV "Train Yard", a seperate world space with a fixed up rail line would work (of course, that's not ideal for those who want it in the commonwealth). Someone with more creation kit knowledge might have ideas about the animating of cars along a route, etc.

I think rather than trying to "fix up" existing lines, it would be easier to take existing models for tracks and turn them into settlement items that can be placed any where (so players can build their own tracks across the wasteland), and animate the existing train models. Then it could be a creature that runs its own path along the tracks (possibly, as I suggested in a previous post, running supply lines). It could also be a fun fast travel alternative (getting this to work along where tracks have been built might be trickier).

It would still be a ton of work, but certainly easier than the alternative.

So I started digging into this and the meshes and textures for the railroad are all in the Meshes Landscape RailRoads folder. There are whole undamaged sets in it. So arguably all that would be needed to make this work, is to take the unbroken versions, apply navmeshes to them, and then take the train models and apply the same navcontrols linking them to the navmeshes set for the track. The difficulty, I would think, would be making all of the tracks in game cleaned, and to either remove or make the in game trains fixable so they can be used. The other difficulty is programming the trains so they stop at given points where stations can be built. There is also then the issue of adding navmeshes to the trains themselves for passengers, but those could potentially be taken from the vertibird.
