Excessive stuttering?

So I've been playing Oblivion for a while now, and recently bought a new pc which to my delight, could run vanilla Oblivion on full graphics with no problem at all.

I downloaded Qarls Texture Pack, which put a slight load on my video card, so I got the two Lite Reductions. Now, my cpu is going nuts, as if I have no memory left. Loading times are astronomical and every time I turn around, I have to endure about 1 frame every 8 seconds until the cpu finishes grinding on whatever it is. My video card is perfectly capable of running this texture mod, and my cpu was for a while, but now nothing I try seems to work. Does anyone have suggestions or run into this problem themselves?

My system specs are

AMD Ath 64 X2 Dual Core 4200 (I over clocked it to about 4600)

1gb ram

Radeon X1950 Sapphire (Pro) (256mb)

I'm also running Windows XP, as Vista was way too slow.

I want to say 'Get more RAM' first....(sometimes 1G is not enough) And Qarl's Texture Pack is real killer, you know. It nearly killed my system(Oh, those terrible stuttering..), so I had to uninstall the game, delete all custom textures and meshes, and reinstall the game & plugins.

**I wonder if you get what I mean..

I don't know, because I've never actually used QTP3, as my PC can't handle it... although now I have a new graphics card, I might give it a go. The main reason I say to use QTP2 is because there are many mods which allow it to run on lower-spec PCs, and several people have put together optimal install orders for these mods, depending on your personal preference, and the capabilities of your PC. As a rule, if you have less than 512mb video memory, either use QTP2 + the various other plugins to make it easier to run, or don't use a texture overhaul at all.

It all depends on what other mods or texture mods you're running. If you can, hit the "~" key while in the game and type "sdt 13" <enter>, then type "tdt" <enter> and hit the ~ key again. This'll show your current vid memory. If it goes significantly above 256 MB (more than 25%), then you could gain some performance and smoothness by using the Max version. Futhermore, if you have 1 GB of system RAM, there isn't much memory left for Oblivion to work with depending on what background apps you're running as well - check Task Manager to see what's consuming a lot of memory (besides Oblivion heh).

On my other system (a single core A64 3000+ oc'ed to 2.4, 1 GB ram, Radeon X800 12 pipe 256 MB) it runs QTP3 reduced max smoothly without stuttering.

I'd also highly recommend that you install/use the Streamline mod. Set it for aggressive or higher memory purging setting to curb run-away memory situations.

GL!

Hmm thanks for the input.

I just tried using QTP2 with a couple reducers, but it's exactly the same. I am convinced the video card is not the problem. (I can run games such as Medieval 2 Total War on full graphics with no problem at all)

The CPU grinds like hell, particularly when I exit the game. Is there any reason why the cpu might be getting too involved in the game?
