anandus
Technically it is a license, of course. If you'd buy the game it'd cost you millions of dollars :P I've bought lots of games on PC, Sony & Nintendo consoles and I've never spent more than 100 bucks. I'm not buying Bethesda's legal rights, source code or trademarks.I know, but with software you never 'buy the software', you 'buy a license to use it' :)(But that's a technicality)
Rydan
I know, but with software you never 'buy the software', you 'buy a license to use it' :) I know, I'm a programmer myself. My point is, playing with words doesn't help in this case. Truth is, we (PC users) are forced to accept a whole lot of disadvantages. And no, I don't want to play Skyrim on a console, thank you. Edit: Judging from a poll I saw at ning.com most gamers are going to buy a physical copy; only a minority will actually need Steam to download the game. How are you getting Skyrim? I'll be going to down to the store to buy a physical copy: 41%I'm getting it sent from an online retailer: 26%I'm going to a midnight release event: 24%I'm downloading it from Steam: 7%I'm not getting the game: 1% Total Votes: 2,429 Edited November 5, 2011 by Rydan
Greyhawk2
You buy a game and it comes with loads of parts to it. I assume that a loader is part of these. In addition (and if you are very lucky) you may choose (like for Oblivion) to add extra Mod Mangers to help it run all the extras that the gaming community produces. You see how good the game is (with all its benefits and drawbacks) and decide if you want to keep it on your hard disk. Some you love (Oblivion) and some you hate (Fallout 3) but although the reviews guide you they only tell you what other people think of it. I prefer it if games load fast, have customisable saves and don't hog system resources - but - most of all I want them to be games that I can enjoy - 'cos after the first few days I tend to know (and maybe just accept) what the game is. I just hope that the Skyrim game is as good as Oblivion and Morrowind (and doesn't have the old pig-ugly NPCs - although I'm sure the modders will correct it if do). Ordered it 9 months ago and just hope its what I'm expecting. Steam or no-steam? Not a big issue for me - UNLESS Steam folds and I can't play!!! Fatalmasterpiece
All the why's and wherefor's can come down to one thing, Money. Steam has an agreement with Zenimaxmedia, money has/will be exchanged, hands shaken. It doesn't matter that the game will be cracked within weeks, regardless of any drm. It doesn't matter that many of us resent having to use Steam or that many of you feel it's "not that bad". If you want to play the game, and mod it, and discuss it here, you will be using Steam. Like it or hate it. So let's get over it... Edited November 5, 2011 by Fatalmasterpiece
Ozimandias
The trend is for companies to squeeze every last cent they can from consumers. They have hordes of bean-counters thinking up new ways to do it. Squeeze that golden goose. It is up to us to not let them. Apathy or submission will cost you in the long run. you may have no choice about using steam, but let them know you don't like it. you have been warned. As if we needed another reason to feel uncomfortable with having to sign up for it. Nice. Edited November 10, 2011 by moho25

Wasn't sure how their forums were setup. Getting clarification on Bethesda's forums from folks right now.
anandus
A tip in general: Enable Steam Guard. This links your computer(s) to your Steam-account. It's an extra security measure*. (* although it's easy to bypass by someone if someone is also possible to login to your email account, so keep different passwords)
moho25
Ah, good. Thanks for the tip. I don't repeat any passwords, so I should be all good there.
