My game is crashing at startup

I recently bought the game of the year edition of Fallout 3 from Steam. I have been trying to get the game to go past the loading screen but it crashes at the first slide of the game. At first I thought it was a pop up from anti virus. The game did not seem to like being distracted by pop ups. I have disabled my anti virus and all mods I installed. It seemed to get to the menu screen after that.

I re installed all my mods and now it is crashing basically as soon as I load the game.

It may be worth mentioning that I think I once had it working with my mods loaded. It did not crash from the pop up from my anti virus( I use AVG Pro). I exited the game because I forgot I did not install the unofficial patch that I have heard fixes many things that were left. It was after I installed the "Unofficial Patch" that this problem arose. I am thinking it was that that is causing my problems. I have no way of knowing for sure. This is beyond frustrating. I have spent several hours trying to figure out what to do to fix this. I cannot find anything that helps me pin it down.

I know it quite a bit of info to digest and I apologize. I am at my wits end and about to pull my hair out. I would really appreciate any help regarding this.

FO3 Wanderers Edition - Alternate Travel.esp (This one is confusing me. Is it supposed to be .esp or .esm? Is it in the right place?)

It is supposed to be a .esp but it's not in the right place. Download and run BOSS to auto-sort your load order.

CALIBRxMerchant.esp

I'm betting this plugin has "xCalibr.esm as a master. If that is so, then that's the reason why your game crashes at startup. If you load a plugin that's missing it's master file, the game will crash at startup.

The master file you need (xCalibr.esm) used to be located over here: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=11684

But, as you can see, it's currently "under moderation" because it's author was banned some time ago.

So all you can do about it is disabling the "CALIBRxMerchant.esp" plugin. Your game should start just fine afterwards.

These however might be a problem.

FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional VATS Halftime.esp
FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional VATS Realtime.esp
FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Restore Tracers (automatics only).esp
FO3 Wanderers Edition - Optional Restore Tracers.esp

Use only one for VATS and one for Tracers, not both.

And this one is definately a problem, disable it, it requires Project Beauty as a masterfile.

Edit: And I forgot one thing, make a merged patch with FO3 Edit.

Thank you all for your replies. I really appreciate it. I will try what you guys have suggested. I actually re installed Fallout 3 last night so I am going to start from scratch.

Also, regarding the "Unofficial Patch", that was not the thing that messed up? Like I said I think I had it working once before I installed this.

I am new to modding this game but already I think I like what I see about the game and the community if you all are representations of what it is like. I have not had good experiences with modding communities before.

Merged patch i a plugin that combines all edited lists into one. It is always placed last in the load order and you have delete it and make a new one every time you add/remove mods.

Here's how to make a merged patch.

1. Start FO3 Edit

2. Load your mods

3. When everything loads select all your mods, then right-click on the mod list and select Create Merged Patch

4. A small window will pop up asking you to name your patch, write something and click Create

5. Now when exiting FO3 Edit another window will pop up named Save Changed Files, click OK

6. When starting FOMM or FO3 Launcher put your patch LAST in the load order and check it

Correct. And that single plugin is the reason why your game crashes at startup, because it has the Project Beauty master file set as master.

Just delete that plugin.

I am now trying to get a clean new install of the game to work. It is crashing at start up with out mods. Or I should say, I only have FOMM and the archive invalidator installed.
