Mouse Customizing

Scanned through and couldn't find a topic on this. Oblivion and Fallout totally revolutionized how I look at what games can be, and I'm stoked to see how Skyrim is gonna rise the bar again. Sadly I've only seen them on PS3, and been unable to see the modding world opened up. Not an issue this time round, new rig is ready to go. Been going through Portal getting used to the WSAD controls and got me thinking; how do you PC veterans typically set up your extra mouse buttons for best use in Oblivion, and likely similar planned for Skyrim?

 

I've got a Razor DA, so two easy access thumb btns and of course the scroll click. Thinking at least one of them for an emergency get-my-arse-outta-the-fire shout would be handy.

 

note that I didn't get a new laptop just for skyrim, needed it for work. Just made sure it could be used for both. :-)

I've been using my crappy Dell mouse for years, which only has two buttons plus the wheel. What I would do, though, if I had the extra buttons, would be something like this:

 

Left/Right MB: Hands

Middle MB: Shout (used for casting in Oblivion)

Thumb Buttons: Hotkey Weapon Loadouts (aforementioned arse-out-of-fire)

I've only really used one extra button for Oblivion and Fallout, I used a side button for casting in Oblivion and the same button for VATS in Fallout.

Mouse 5: Sprint

mouse wheel up: Who knows

Mouse wheel down: who knows

 

For WoW my bindings are:

As you can see, even with only using 4 buttons (mouse4,5,wheelup, wheel down) you can use shift/ctrl/alt to quadruple your number of binds. All without moving your hand off of WASD.

I used one of the thumb buttons for block in oblivion. This could be changed to being for the left hand, and that way the left mouse can still be used for right hand attack without having to shift it over to the right mouse button. I used right mouse button for move right. Friend got me into that layout. Left hand moves left, right hand moves right. and it frees up your left index finger to hit other keys while still enabling you to move in all directions.

I use a Logitech G9x and personally I don't really use the extra buttons on it, apart from the forward/back buttons which are really useful for web browsing, and the occasional quick DPI adjustment for FPS games. I'm more interested in keyboard customisation for hardware like the Logitech G series keyboards, and if there is going to be any gamepanel functionality. Though I understand the concerns about customisation with gaming mice like the Logitech G7, Microsoft sidewinder and the awesome Cyborg R.A.T 7 gaming mouse - I just prefer to use the keyboard for those kind of things.

Ahh, a fellow WoW player. Well I used to play WoW so I know the plight of one who keybinds.

 

I hope to can set favorites to numbers rather than having to pause and scroll through the list like console users. I have a Razer Naga mouse so I have 4 mouse buttons and a 1-12 numberpad on the side of my mouse. My plans are:

Mouse 1: Left Hand

Mouse 2: Right Hand

Mouse 3 (scroll wheel click): Dragon Shout

Mouse 4: TBD (To be determined)

Mouse 5: TBD

Mouse Num Pad 1-12: Favorites/Hotkeys (hopefully)

WASD: Forward/Backward/Strafe

F: Activate/Open/Interact/etc.

E: Draw/Sheath weapon/spell

Q: Grab/Drag

R: Wait

Tab: Pause/Inventory/Skills/Map/Etc.

Shift: Sprint

Ctrl: Sneak/Crouch toggle

Z: Toggle Run/Walk

X: Auto Run

C: Hold Run/Walk

V: Open favorites list (Assuming I can't just hotkey it to the mouse number pad)

That's definitely a good starting list. I really like playing stealthy characters, so I'm thinking one of the mouse 4/5 would be good for crouch.

What the crap I couldn't ever get my extra mouse buttons to work in oblivion it acted like I wasn't pressing anything. (I have a WoW Cata mouse...please don't flame me lol)

I don't think those buttons are necessary for Skyrim. To me those buttons mean fast. Like in a FPS (like CoD) they could be used to panic-knife and enemy if he gets too close.
