Mod Submitting Requirements

Can something be done about the users who upload mods and fill in slim descriptions?

I've been downloading mods since TESSOURCE. The new interface for TESNEXUS is really innovative and I really like that it's being dedicated a great deal of time for a growing improvement.

One of the things I believe are missing, imho, are instructions or requirements concerning mod submitting. Actually, probably the only thing I'm asking for are decent descriptions. Maybe also, create a new category for different languages to keep it all nice and tidy. But my major concern are the descriptions.

I've seen many mods that go by the trend:

Mod name: "Pied Piper of Hammelin"

Images: None

Downloads: 2

Description: "Suprise! I hope you like it! ;) "

Some of them have been described by members of the community in the comments section rather than the uploader. I'm sure this isn't the first time somebody complained about this...that's why I've been wondering why it's being allowed to slide? Is it to facilitate the upload process by bringing the bureaucracy down to nil?

I agree, but tbh, I don't know how much can be done about it, short of having every single file checked by a moderator to ensure it's detailed enough, etc, before being available. Needless to say, with the amount of uploads this site has, that would be completely unfeasible. I can't really think of any better way to do it off the top of my head, though...

And there's always the option of giving it a 0 rating.

Except that in my experience (though I've only recently started posting, I've been dl-ing since tessource) that low ratings tend to get deleted (and not just tesnexus) especially if accompanied by insulting remarks.

Although they usually only get deleted if they are just being trolls. If there is an actual reason for a low rating then it will remain. Things like "it gave me a virus" or "there was one part that I didn't like" should be deleted.

A low rating because of a lacking description on the download page is hardly appropriate. If there is no readme, or if the readme is similarly lacking, a low rating might be called for. Still, it would hardly merit a 0 unless the mod itself is entirely broken.

You do realize of course that this is covered quite well by LHammonds in the tutorial section

http://thenexusforums.com/index.php?showtopic=27968

But I know how to copy and paste:

This tutorial can be found in it's entirety here

This tutorial will walk you through how to upload your mod to TESSource.net.

Prep-Work

1. Create your mod and make sure the name is consistant throughout.

Example:

Name of the Mod: MyMod

Name of the Files:

Data\MyMod.7z (compressed archive of all the files in your mod)

Data\MyMod.esp (no version number)

Data\MyMod Readme.txt

Data\Meshes\Armor\MyMod\Mcuirass.nif

Data\Textures\Armor\MyMod\Mcuirass.dds

Data\Textures\Menus\Icons\Armor\MyMod\cuirass.dds

2. Make sure it conforms to Modding Etiquete.

3. If the mod includes .NIF files, make sure the texture paths are not hard-coded.

4. If your mod is visual or contains items, create screen shots and convert to .JPG format.

5. Create a readme file (Readme Generator)

Upload the Mod

1. Create an account and login. http://www.tessource.net/login.php

2. Click Add A File in the MEMBER AREA which is on the right side of the web site just under the MENU.

3. Fill in the following information and click Submit

- File Name: MyMod (the name of your mod)

- Version: 1.0

- Author: you (or the actual author if your re-uploading for somebody else)

- Category: Pick the right one for the right game: Oblivion or Morrowind (you can always change later if you goofed).

- File Description: Paste the entire contents of your readme here. You shouldn't be adding anything to this upload that isn't already contained in your readme.

- Author's Notes: Paste the Credits section of your readme here.

- File Mirrors: OPTIONAL: If you've uploaded to other places, list them here.

4. After you click Submit, you are taken to another page where you can actually upload your mod. Set the following and click Submit:

- Name of File: MyMod (the name of your mod)

- Upload: Click Browse and pick the archive of your file (example: MyMod.7z)

- If this is your only file (or the most current version), place a Checkmark beside Make Primary.

Attach Screenshots

1. Once the mod is uploaded, click Manage Your Files in the MEMBER AREA if you are not already there.

2. Find the mod you just uploaded in your mod list and click the button called IMAGES that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.

3. For Image #1, click Browse and find your 1st screenshot (should be the best one).

4. Type a short description of the image.

5. Click Submit.

5. Repeat the above steps until you've uploaded all your images. The site tends to keep the order better if you submit your images one at a time. Always use image slot #1.

Requirements

1. If your mod requires other files to download which is noted in your Requirements area of your readme, click the button called REQUIREMENTS that is on the same line as the mod you want to modify.

2. Type a description of the required file. Example: Ren's Beauty Pack (full)

3. Type/paste the direct link to the file. Example: http://www.tessource.net/files/file.php?id=4431

4. Repeat the above steps for each required file and click Submit.

Now before killing the messenger, there are two file moderators for this site, LHammonds and myself (Buddah).....the work we do here is totally voluntary and there is no compensation, other than an occasional thank you.

My personal view, is that all mods should when appropriate have at a minimum of:

Detailed description (An absolute must), but we have to accept what the author can provide, some contributors are very young, and other don't speak english.

Screenshots if they are necessary

Read Me, (My personal pet peeve) but a normal necessity

One last thing, the report system functions quite well, and we respond as soon as possible, but we have to on the site to be aware of reports and we do have a life other that Oblivion/Morrowind
