How to play without patch...?

I finally managed to get the game installed thanks to everyone's help, but now I'm stuck downloading the patch. It's been an hour and it's still at 4% (60-90k/sec). I double checked my firewall settings, and Steam has top permissions. I would assume it's just busy, but I don't seem to be seeing a lot of other people stuck at this stage.

I keep reading where people say you can play without the patch, but I can't seem to figure out how. I'm not very familiar with Steam. I tried choosing "Do not automatically update this game" in the properties and stopping the download, but when I click play it sits at "Preparing to launch" for a bit and then goes back to patching. It never makes any progress this way, so I have to cancel this, go back to the library, and click "Resume Updating" again. It is the same whether I try to launch it through Steam or from the disc.

I also tried offline mode, but it says Skyrim is not ready for online mode. I don't know why, as I already installed it and put in my key.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't suppose there's a mirror up somewhere? I googled it, but all I find are cracks...

Ummm, not trying to be difficult, but... What patch?

I have a Steam download (prior to release), a Steam pre-load install, and use a Steam game initiation. Hven't seen any patch notice. Was this something that applied to physical disc installs only?

Launch Stream and then select offline mode. Once in offline mode got to Library and select Skyrim. You will play the game offline with no patch interruption.

I have the same problem, but following these directions still leads to "not ready for offline mode". I have been in the process of downloading the update for more than two hours with my broadband connection.

The patch (1.1.125) was released yesterday, long after the disks were manufactured. It should have been an additional automatic download for everyone. I don't believe, even with the disk, that you can avoid the patch since you have to log on to Steam for initial verification. The option on Steam to not automatically download new patches never worked for me in FONV but by simply playing offline (and never verifying your cache) you can avoid future "upgrades" until you read about the results and see how others are fairing.

Thanks for the info. It is frustrating that it takes so long to download. I suspect there might be a lot of traffic on the site.

I'm just curious. I have a PC disc. Why the hell can't i just play the damn game from the disc? It tells me i have another 4 hours of downloading till i can play. What the hell for? I've never played any of these Oblivion games and this just makes me not want to. What a terribly run company. I should of just bought it for the xbox and saved myself all this hassle.

(Just replied with this on another thread, might as well post it here too as there's a couple of new threads popping up every minute now!)

I have the disk too and I installed, verified, allowed the patch to download and was playing the game in just over 12 mins total. Here's what I did -

1.) Logged on to my Steam account (If you don't already have one then log on to Steam and register for one, you don't have to have any games in it yet) and left the window open.

2.) Put the DVD in my drive (make sure you have 'autorun" disabled) went to "My Computer" clicked my DVD drive and double-clicked "Setup".

3.) Followed the prompts for entering the Key and watched as the install screen said "Installing from Disk" until it finished, waited a minute or two for the patch to download and install from Steam (you can't easily see that happen, just wait until a little window pops up very quickly from your task bar and the lower part of the Steam window says that the download was complete.

4.) Hit "Play" and it was off to the races (after the game initializing phase.)

Should work for anyone I would think. Good Luck (always needed for Beth games!).

Sorry for really dumb question, but how does a PC user see what verison they are currently running?

In game press the esc button to bring up the menu and at the bottom left of the menu it shows the version # that you are runnning
