Maxing Out Graphics

I'm running on a tweaked ultra setting (higher draw distances for everything) and I have limited the fps to 45 and I get that most of the time with occasional drops to 30.

I did have it set to 60fps but the drops were more noticeable and slightly more frequent.

I am running a Core i3 first gen, 8GB Kingston ram, Nvidia GTX 460 on Ultra maxed out, 35-60 FPS outside, 50-60 FPS inside. Heavily modded. I switched to windowed mode and that helped my FPS. Also only running at 1440x900 as that is my monitors highest res possible. Edited by Mjel72

Im playing Skyrim in 3D Vision 2 on Ultra, only shadows - high. No AA, FFXA on. Lots of graphics mods installed, highest rez HD textures. Runs smoothly on my i5 2.5k/GTX 680/16gb.

 

I cant recommend enough to play this game in 3D. Vanilla Skyrim was cool, but with right mods and 3D Vision 2 this is the most immersive and mind blowing gaming experience you'll ever get. 3D makes world difference

Hardware isn't the real limitation here, it's the engine's code itself. An exceedingly powerful computer is needed just to manage all the dreadful code and lack of real optimization. It's so riddled with bugs and band-aids, it's a joke. That it runs at all is basically miraculous. Take something like Cod3 or even an "oldie" like Crysis 2, just as impressive (if not more, actually) yet they make vastly more efficient use of a systems' resources.

This. My Phenom II Black Edition 995 X4 at 3.2Ghz shouldn't even be stressed by Skyrim. My video card should be stressed even less. On my system I can make many games look much more impressive, even open-world ones like TW2, which has better graphics, better LOD, better framerates, and better GFX despite being much older. It's a worse game than Skyrim in my opinion, since it doesn't give you the freedom that Skyrim does, but the point is that the graphics are far superior and the code is much more efficient.

 

The engine of Skyrim is just... why? It's almost unchanged from like 2002. And it wasn't even good back then. They've optimized a bit and changed the name, but it still stutters far more than any modern engine should.

 

Wth does it handle AI? I can be casually walking through a ruin, with my fps rock solid at 60 with vsync or unsteadily at 90 without vsync, and as soon as one dude pulls out a sword the game stutters down to 15 fps constantly. One guy attacking me shouldn't do that much! Is his radiant AI caught in a paradox where he considers the meaning of his digital life over and over again or something?

I'm running dual 7970s, but wasn't able to get smooth play with shadows on ultra until I disabled crossfire, yanked the bridge cable and ran with one card. I know two of these cards is probably overkill, but that's what tax returns are for. I'm pretty sure it's a little bit of crappy AMD drivers and mostly crappy game engine. The framerates I was getting on other graphic intensive games was obscene while crossfire enabled, but Skyrim surges, ripples and tears regardless of what settings I use. I can get it smooth and creamy in the forested areas, but it bogs down in whiterun. I tweak it to get whiterun running smooth, and it runs like crap in the forest. Once I disabled crossfire, it now looks and runs great. Let's see what the next version of CCC can do.

@memlapse, the 'problem' most certainly isn't with the hardware of drivers. As John Carmac (famed dev for Doom, Quake, RAGE, etc.) driver devs are constantly having to create work-arounds for buggy games that don't follow the "rules". Consider that if you could have a driver built for one game and one game only, it wouldn't support anything else, it would be 100x the size and 100x more efficient. Yes, 100x more efficient, just imagine it. All drivers are exponentially bloated as support for previous titles becomes necessary.

 

Now that's bloat.

 

Bethesda are, by far, the worst of the culprits - just look at the revisions to both Nvida/AMD drivers since Skyrim's release and with the patches. Bethesda have put out garbage, with no real way of fixing it.

 

Your hardware is more than adequate, fire up a copy of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. - Call of Pripyat, or Crysis 2, of CoD3 or even DiRT 3 if you want to see well done engines at work.

I've played all but one of the above and a few others and they look fabulous and are stable, for the most part. I've had a few crashes with ME3 and Dirt3, but Skyrim is the most fickle. More so, when it's modded to hell.

Used a few of your skyrim.ini tweeks and just wanted to say thanks. Improved my graphix and seemed to make it play better. Was looking at lod improvment mods and thought I'd check out the forums and stumbled over this. It was working so well down from High Hathor that a bumped my shadows up to ultra, but alas at the bottom of the decent the lag poked its ugly head. Musing over "HiAlgoBoost FPS Performance Accelerator " atm, it makes some big claims...
