hoofhearted4
i bring up Demon Souls/Dark Souls again because it really fits many points we are making the game is hard. when you play for the first time, you will die A LOT! even more is the game gets harder the more you die enemies get stronger, you get less health. but it also gets easier every time you die because you learn more. when you die, the level resets. the enemies are in the same place (they might do something a little different but they are still in the same place as before) so you can anticipate whats around the corner. and as you learn the enemies you can learn exactly what they will (or can) do. so on your first play through, a lot of people take the cautious way out. use a shield and sword, block every attack and attack only after...and poison everything until it dies. but once youve beaten the game a couple of times, and youve learned it, it becomes extremely easy (because everything is the same) so then you realize you dont need a shield. you dont need the strongest weapon and at that point ppl start playing with handicaps. such as a lvl 1 play through, a barbrian starting equipment play through (you start at lvl 9 but your equipment is jank.) which imo is prolly the hardest way to play the game. but even hen its just a matter of rolling to dodge and attacking when you can. shields slowly rotated out cause they are useless. you could do more damage two handing a weapon. so ya, the game is hard, very hard but its not impossible, and in fact once you learn the game, it nearly becomes laughably easy. my friend just got it, ive been playing with him. took him like 2 hours to get past the first lvl and he was starting to hate the game (which i didnt want cause i rly wanted to play with him) so now that he can play with me hes actually enjoying the game because he doesnt die anymore (im careful not to blow through the level for him, so he actually see/learns/ and plays the level, but i also dont let him die either, if i can help it) but in Demons Souls, there are no OHKOs from enemies. some enemies might do a on of damage, which at your current level could be a OHKO, but the attack itself isnt designed to automatically be a OHKO, you either need to dodge/block the attack or increase your Vitality. which means everything can always be beaten with skill and strategy, as the enemies have no way of a instant kill.....though again after you get to a certain amount of play throughs such as NG+5 (every time you beat the game, and continue on to a New Game it gets a certain % harder) the bosses wil deal more damage then you will have health, so at that point, youll NEED to dodge or Block. Beriallord
I am also not the kind of gamer to stop, or limit using certain things, if the game is broken, its broken, and not my problem. If the game isn't challenging as is, then its simply not challenging. I don't go out of my way to create artificial challenges for myself in games. I look for a genuine and real wholesome challenge that catches me off guard and unprepared at times and makes me pay for it. Challenging games don't have an easy way out.Well, there is a difference between "I'm going to win this game naked, just using my fists, and running in constant poison condition" and "I know that powerleveling a skill or using a combination of spells (invisibility and doom (for classic FF) allows me to win most battles without a sweat, so I won't use those unless I really have a tough time." In the first case, you are going out of your way to add a challenge (usually excessive) just because the game is lacking one. In the second case, you acknowledge that something gives you a marked advantage because of some designed aspect or short sighted feature, but acknowledge that you are able to moderate its usage so that the game doesn't become too easy. In the case of a game like dragon age, using more than one mage on your team allows for you to pretty much roll over everything, but using just one in your group for a little bit of crowd control or healing is a good balance. 2 Blood mages is really overdoing it. hoofhearted4
on Nightmare, using the right group and right skills is important. running two mages you would die (or at least i would) cause they are too fragile. games like Mass Effect and Dragon Age, require skill. but on Regular and even Hard, you can usually get by without really looking into it. play on Nightmare/Insane nd you really have to use strategy. for example, Mass Effect. my friend was playing on Hard. but when he chose his group it was whomever he felt like bringing. usually the Krogan and Garrus or something. cause it didnt matter. playing in Insane though, i basically needed to run with Miranda and Thane the whole time (with me as a Sentinal with Reave) because of Miranda's health/attack bonus and the fact that they both had Warp and Overload (and so did I) and without those, the game would be like impossible....plus Thane was my favorite so it was a bonus lol. All 2 mages need are a Sword and Shield tank getting the aggro, and in most situations you don't even need the tank because they are too busy being locked down by the mages to attack anything. And my mages weren't exactly easy kills because I pumped health instead of mana because I was using Blood magic anyway and having all my toggles on like Arcane Shield, Rock armor, etc used what little mana I had. Any spell that says "Friendly fire possible" I just don't even use. Edited December 9, 2011 by Beriallord
