maboru
The fact that the next patch for the PC won't be out until after the console patch allows for the hope that they're taking their time to get the game more PC friendly at least. The time it's taking to release the CK can also indicate that good things are in store for modding as well. Some modders are already using the old TESsnip tool and dissecting the bsa's so TESVedit should be a decent port and I'm sure the good folks at Silverlock are already hard at work on the script extender. Hopefully Wrye is deep into their thing as well. At first I was disappointed that the original Beth claim of building a new game engine from the ground up turned out to be simply rebuilding the old Havok/Gamebryo engine but I'm certainly not disappointed in the results (for the most part!) and the fact that there are so many more spoken parts (and voice actors) in Skyrim could indicate that lip files may have been better coded as well. If so we may see a run on PC studio recording kits. Vanilla Skyrim is gorgeous when viewed from afar but, as we have all seen, the closer you get to objects the less enthralling they become. Kudos to all the modders that have thus far provided us with much improved textures and I'm sure that the much improved meshes will ensue immediately upon the release of the CK. I have a feeling that Beth thought why invest a lot of time and money in the details when the modding community is just going to teak them all anyway (and at no cost to us!) [And, perhaps, provided a more simplified process to allow them to do just that!] We'll see...
maboru
Given Beth's recently shown (seeming) aversion to LAA (I know Skyrim is a fantasy Medieval game but come on!) I decided to further refine my mod request to the simplest terms - 1.) The ability to choose or (for me at least) create a class during character creation that just adds a nominal amount of one time boosts to the seven chosen abilities and then improving only those abilities will count toward level-up (the rest will increase as always and you can still perk-point any of them). [if Beth really wants to limit us to only 2gb this would reduce the memory overhead required by this mod.]
Logiwink
What if there were mods to add different origin stories - something like the different origins in Dragon Age? That alone gave me a lot of investment in my character and added to re-playability. So, instead of starting out on the prisoner cart maybe you could be journeying to the College of Winterhold with your mentor Mage when you're attack and he/she is killed? Or you start on a farm outside whiterun when you grew up, but the dragon roasts your farm and family? Or maybe you had an assassination contract that went bad leaving you with amnesia - and someone pulls you out of the river and nurses you back to health in Riverwood (a la Bourne Identity). Or perhaps you're a disaffected Imperial Legion soldier who desserts? Or you could be the horsethief from Rorikstead but you actually manage to get away.... xaliqen
I agree, putting some kind of real character attributes back into the game (and perhaps character classes as well) would go a long way towards making each character unique.
maboru
Happily, even with the CK not due out until next month, progress along the lines of this request is already being made. Shortly after posting a plethora of new fonts and ui tweaks were released and last week this - http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1850 The first mod to allow us to chose a class, albeit along the lines of the modder's preferences (as it should be, most modders rightly mod the game for themselves first and then upload it for others.) However Mibbits is taking requests for further modifications of his mod and it is of course still a WIP until the CK allows full(er) access to to the game mechanics. Highly recommended, check it out and if you like it let's get him some more endorsements!
DarkoVaultTech
I have to agree with this post. And simply the layout of the character is just too bland. Who exactly are is the dragonborn (main character)? How'd you get where you are? I personally think each race should have their own beginning. the character creation goes along with this, I get its nice to be whoever you want and still achieve the same goals, its nice at the start, but one ability doesnt really make a difference in this game, aka berserk or battle cry. This is what I would like to see: Different beginnings for each race: Aka like a stowaway on a boat to skyrim, or a bounty hunter coming to skyrim to hunt a bount. Perk and Magic that only apply to certain races - Give each class a set of perks which they only have, lets say Orc is able to duel weild twohanded swords because of their brute strength. While Dark elves, or High elves get spells that other races cant obtain. Like elve bloodline magic I dont know. A background story - Its like you jump into the middle of the game and your like pow your dragonborn, you dont really understand who you are, and what your doing there and how you became. So Im asking for a background story to let you understand more yourself. Better conflict war - Ulfic vs Tallius I mean its cool that they added a war between the dragon conflict but itd be awesome if you can go to a town or wake up from sleepin in an inn to a battle in the town imperial vs stormcloaks or just randomly running around and find a battle. and You get to choose your side. and Have towns constantly switching powers. Side with the dragons - Be able to destroy the human race with your powers. Says it all. goes with being able to choose sides. maybe a stretch - build your own town become jarl, rule by respect, fear, money or kindness, and wage war across skyrim with your own army and become high king I honestly think Skyrim is an amazing game, and I love it. But the story is dull, poof your a dragonborn n now you gotta save the world? There is so much this game coulda done to make it 15/10. Maybe once the CK comes out, I can do a whole skyrim overhaul or something, Idk ill have to learn how to mod lol.
WolfStark
I would love if the character would be finally able to speak and move his and hers damn mouth while do something.. or better - all should do something instead just staring at you even if they are working while they are talking. Shepard hitting the reporter was one of the coolest things ever happened in a game. Not because it was violent but you just think "Jeah she did the most badass thing, excact like my (more renegade) character should act". Unfortunatly Bethesda has a nice world and all but animations are years behind. Hell, NPCs give me something and I can't even see it! Okay that was also a case in other RPGs but Dark Messiah did it better and that game is 5 (!) years old. But okay small steps are more important now and that begins with old, traditional choice in character creation. And I hope there isn't only come the option to choose a class but also an option to create the character way more detailed. Compared to modern MMOs of the last years, the editor is far from advanced.. or modern.
Melissia
I actually find that it's easier to get in to roleplaying my character than Morrowind and Oblivion were. Your character is whatever class you play her as. If you call her a mage but you're using heavy armor, a warhammer, and never use any spells, well... she's not a mage, she won't have any real magical talent. My only real wish, as far as this goes, is that there were more moral choices in Skyrim. For example, making enemies submit, being able to visit a temple and heal the sick or wounded (why does my dual-casted healing hands do nothing to them?), choosing to try to talk down enemies instead of kill them....
