Fallout: Skyrim

I don't want to be the first to criticize the game in a major way, but I must say that, while I have only played for a couple of hours and while the graphics are very good, I am disappointed in the game overall. I feel like it is a redo of fallout 3 in an elder scrolls skin and a general dumbing down of the series. This is my honest opinion so far and hopefully it will change. However, I liked Morrowind and Oblivion and the feel of the game there. Here the game just feels like a rehashed version of Fallout 3, at least so far. I hope I am wrong and things change, but when I pick a lock and I feel like I am back in Fallout, I wonder how much actual creativity went into this game. Again, I hope I am wrong.

Perks, special kill animations and lockpicking, all welcome changes from Oblivion in my opinion. Don't really see what else has been taken from Fallout.

No offense, but this is most certainly not a general dumbing down of the series. It's a major step up from Oblivion.

Indeed, I for one can't even play FO3, FONV or Oblivion without mods, but I'm very much enjoying the vanilla version of Skyrim, I think it's a step up from Oblivion in every way....Sometimes I wonder if these people have even played previous TES games.

I have played a bit more now and no, it is not fallout 3 completely. I was wrong in that regard. But no matter what anyone else may say, it is indeed a dumbing down. Go back to morrowind and look at the skills and the intricate play involved in the quests (given the video, etc. quality for the time period.....go to Oblivion and look at the planning involved in leveling up, and yes I also play a heavily modded Oblivion....) Now go to skyrim and just play and it all magically happens. Just play and the level ups magically appear (wow....just like fo3). Give me a break. When one is playing a role playing game like the elder scrolls, part of the fun is the collecting, the planning ahead, etc. Now everything just happens automatically and in a very pretty manner. Boring. Yes the fighting is "cooler" and the special effects are great, but the role playing aspect is severely depleted.

I'm loving the game... but when outside white run, I keep thinking I'm playing fallout!

Either a texture has been reused, or a plant!

As for the new skill system... I love it!

The perks etc are just awesome, and I really don't miss acrobatics or athletics (I jumped everywhere in Morrowind and Oblivion... ruined imersion....) (Now I have NPC walkiing in to walls, flying ma mammoths, and water walking elk to do that!)

to be honest, i too did see some places that felt like rehashed from Fallout3/NV. Particularly the caves. otherwise, what you probably aren't used to, is that Skyrim pursues a generally darker visual tone than Oblivion's rather bright fantasy theme. The textures are more realistic, and while the colours are still vibrant they have a much darker tone to them, which adds to the game's theme.
