I think, if we look at it objectively and not tainted with nostalgia as everyone seems to be, the vanilla version of Skyrim is definitely superior to the vanilla version of Oblivion. Morrowind is a different matter, but the fact is, until we've had the opportunity to mod Skyrim to the same levels as the past two games, this is always going to be an unfair comparison and people will continue to give Skyrim a far harder time than it actually deserves.

I've always loved cold, snowy, gloomy areas like Skyrim so in aesthetics alone Skyrim>>>>>>>Oblivion....can't give an opinion on Morrowind cause I was 8 I think when that game was released.

Can't give an opinion on the story either cause I'm only 14 hours into the game and I've done less than 10 quests. So far so good though.

The UI is nice, I LOVE how the health/mp bars only come up when I need them(which is literally only in combat) and the inventory and chat UI is kinda annoying, I'm using a keyboard right now but I'm going to find my xbox controller tomorrow, I don't really prefer keyboard+mouse over a game pad considering I would've gotten this on xbox if it wasn't for the modding.

So yes, Skyrim>Oblivion so far.

I think I mostly agree with the people above, it's too early. I miss Morrowinds armor and weapons (can't forget dwarven ruins :P) Oblivion had great diversity. Skyrim tho... The combat is what gets me. IMO they nailed it. I'm going primarily magic so I haven't seen much melee yet, and I can't express how blown away I am by the combat. The dragon fights are some of the coolest things I've ever done in a video game and they GREATLY improved dungeon traps. You actually have to watch yourself.

This is, of course, leaving out tech... Like how I just drool at the environment 90% of the time. The npcs react much better too.

My heart said I should vote for Morrowind and I did. Best game ever! Even if I'll enjoy Skyrim just as much, Morrowind will still be the first. It's like the first kiss, you know...

Hahaha, I say too that morrowind is the best game so far. Compared to oblivion, the storyline rocked. And the immersion was amazing. I mean just look at all the telvanni house in the east coast of the morrowind continent. Or at the crater in the center. Plus the atmosphere was more deep and serious, somehow heavy but really captivating.

Plus the mystery that surrounded that game. You never really knew what to expect from a dungeon. Maybe some enemies, maybe some rats or and entire army in some catacombs. Plus the nerevarine was really a legend. Ashlanders were very different too. Vivec and his kind was something really unique in all the games I have played. Plus the feeling near the end of the game when everyone acknowledged you as the real hero was awesome.

It was what gave birth to the first ever modding community in the elder scrolls series.

Morrowind was, in my mind, vastly superior to either Oblivion or, so far, Skyrim. The simple fact was it was more creative. Oblivion was forests and castles, Skyrim is mountains, mammoths and snow. Morowind was a completely alien world, almost better suited to have taken place on another plane than in Tamriel. The uniqueness of it made it better, and the solid gameplay just reinforced that.

I also much prefered the range of options in Morrowind. Spears, short blade, long blade, axe, blunt, marksman, and thats without getting into grades of armour and spell schools. There was a much wider range of development options, right down to specialisation with particular weapons. I feel that we've lost a lot of that with Oblivion and Skyrim...

Skyrim is amazing. I played all of the games in question to their fullest.

Oblivion was a better game to PLAY than Morrowind

Morrowind was a better GAME to play than Oblivion

But Skyrim is effortlessly better. The quests all have side quests, and then there are radiant quests and then those quests are always different. The difficulty is perfect. I fight a dragon that I kill quickly, then there are some that kill me in two bites. The magic is limited to useful things, the deadra are in lesser amounts, and the falmer were unimaginative compared to the idea portrayed in lore. However, from everything they kept they expanded. Whispmothers, draugr, all of the little detail like bugs. And every-single-little dungeon and view is spectacular beyond that of any of its predecessors. Sure you can attribute that to technology, but really, the tech ALLOWS the game to be more than the other two could have ever hoped to be.

The challenge and lore and culture of Morrowind. The visceral and enjoyable and strategic gameplay, and emotional storyline of oblivion, and dare I say the creativity to make something from nothing present in Fallout 3.

Skyrim is hands-down the best

I love Skyrim, but Morrowind is the best due to the complexity. You could wear clothes under the armor, and the armor had separate puldrins (sp - shoulder guards) and left & right gloves, so you could really get a unique look. Plus cross bows, spears...

oh and you could fly...

plus the teleport spells...

No lore has explained the loss of this stuff.

I liked Morrowind but it never grabbed me. Oblivion did grab me, but it always had big, clear flaws- they took away much of what made Morrowind great and added many things that were simply not quite ready. Oblivion remains a fantastic game though.

With Skyrim I think they've brought back a lot of what Morrowind lost in terms of atmosphere and that sense of adventure, not to mention flying bad guys. Past that though they have taken many of the ideas that Oblivion brought in and polished them up. Combat is better, crafting is better, characters are better realised, the quests are better and bigger etc.

The main thing for Skyrim though is the world. I still get blown away by some of the views. It's not just beautifully rendered, which would be a technical issue, it's beautifully designed. They have built for all intents and purposes a beautiful environment. Seriously somebody should hang the world of Skyrim in a gallery.
