Game freezes when reloading after death.

Hello,

Sometimes, when reloading the game after my character dies, my game freezes at the loading screen.

After selecting the save game I want to load, the game starts loading, albeit very slowly. It takes several minutes for bar to fill, but after being nearly completely filled, the game just freezes, forcing me to terminate the process using Task Manager.

The chance of this happening seems to be random. At some occasions I can reload my game multiple times without any trouble, but other moments, the first time I reload the game results in a freeze. Which is very annoying, as I currently play a challenging mod setup, in which dying is a common occurrence.

Computer specifications:

Processor: Intel Core i7 4790 4,00 GHZ

RAM: 16 GB

Graphics: Nvidia Geforce GTX 960

OS: Windows 8.1

Active Mod Files:

  Reveal hidden contents

Obse Plugins:

* Elys Uncapper

* Elys Universal silent voice.

* MenuQue

I also use ENBoost and have used LOOT to sort my load order.

Does anyone know what causes my game to freeze upon reloading and how to fix it? Thanks in advance for any help given.

I created a new character to see if this problem affects all characters using this mod setup, or only happens with my current character.

With this new character, I managed to reload 20+ times during one session without encountering a single freeze.

So it seems something went wrong during the playthrough of my current character, which causes the game to freeze during reloading.

Is there a way to fix this with my current character?

If not, is there a way to prevent this from happening with a new character?

All I can suggest is something you probably don't want to hear.

Long ago I read something on Wrye Musings when researching my own problems with saving (I was a quick save junkie back then ... not a good thing to do to your game). It said that you should always exit to the desktop and restart the game before loading a save (yes, a bit of a pain in the butt if you are dying a lot).

Other advice I gleaned from the Wrye Musings article was to never overwrite saves (i.e. always save in a new slot from the Esc menu Save menu).

That old character's saves were so bad I normally crashed when crossing cell boundaries and interior/exterior, so that I was forever reloading and saving. By following the advice in Wrye Musings I was able to slowly get that character's saves more stable.

The other trick I used was to use the "coc center and wait 72 hours" trick, which gives the game an opportunity to purge out cell states that are all tangled up.

I have followed that advice (exit to desktop, don't quick save and never overwrite) with all of my more recent characters and haven't run into those probems since.

Thanks for the reply.

I read somewhere that reloading the game without exiting results in some of the data failing to properly reset. But your reply kind of confirms this is the case with my saved games.

As a solution, I installed the mod A Champions death, which introduces the typical MMO death system, in which your character returns from the afterlife and must find the spot of his previous death to regain his inventory. This prevents the user of this mod to having constantly reload his game.

I will also use the 72 hour wait trick to see what happens.

Another question: Is the streamsave function in the streamline mod a save way to save your game?

I remember using it during my previous playthrough in the prehistoric pre-skyrim year of 2010 and found it very handy how it rotates between several files, preventing my save folder from becoming cluttered, while also offering a way to save your game with the press of a single button. (Essentially quicksaving without its drawbacks.)

Once again thanks for the help, as these tips will certainly help me prevent me from making the game more unstable by bad saving practices.

I don't have any experience with Streamline/Streamsave. What little I know about it I've mostly got from various discussions in the Oblivion Reloaded - OBGE v4 mod comments a long way back. I could be remembering wrong but I think that Streamsave was the one thing from Streamline that was recommended. - Edit - See Forli's comment below ... I was remembering wrong.

If you want to search through the OR mod comments I'll give you a tip. At the top of the comments page there is a link to the forum version of the mod's comments, where you can use the forum search tools to search through the comments for things like Streamline or Streamsave.

It's not necessary to exit to desktop, but you must always exit to the main menu. The problem is: when you directly reload in the middle of the game, the game doesn't properly clean everything because of some bug in the engine, so some data (even some progresses in the quests) may slip through the game you're about to load, and this can corrupt the savegame (if you save). When you exit to the menu, instead, the game delete all data, so you can reload without problems from here.

Streamsave is not recommended as it saves the game from outside any menu (like quicksave with F5 and autosave on enter/exit interiors). Many reported their savegame was corrupted when saving from outside the menu (autosave and quicksave are well known, but some users reported the streamsave too).
