ThomasCovenant
Why is th pc in jail... NOT why did Bethesda decide that that is where to start the game/story?actually it seems that they took it directly from the starting clip from Morrowind. What was the pc's crime? Even though you are given a chance to escape, wouldn't it be better to clear your name by doing your sentence? "spoiler"no matter what you do, short of using the console, the emperor still dies.and even if you do stop the emperor's death, everyone "is (still) talking about it." speaking of a death that you can't prevent: why does the captain have to die?just so you can get her sword?as long as you can take her sword, why not her armor as well? To whom it may concern:If you are answering to abuse my lack of understanding, to add to your number-of-posts, or to just be a rude, bored, piece of s***, then please do everyone on this forum a favor and DON'T! Dullahan
The PC is in jail because he and the Emperor were destined to meet. The events surrounding the Emperor's death ahd the death itself, are part of the PC's destiny. I am unsure why they decided to start it up in a jail again, but the start-up is similar to Oblivion, not exactly like it, with a view of that part of Tamriel, and the voice-over by Azura. If you were anyone else, you would do your sentence. But the Emperor has seen you in his dreams, and you are something special. The events all played out as the Nine has decreed. Well, the Emperor was somewhat of a celebrity to Tamriel, so i would be speaking about it often myself. And Renault died because her Path had ended, besides, you needed a sword. If this thread was serious, it would be horrible to flame it. This was a serious response.
WoogieMonster
Maybe there is no explanation of the crime because they figured nobody would actually care. There are tons of games where the pc is a convict and only about half of them explain "why." Take it as Bethesda trying to do something in the game, the same way it is in real life. If someone in real life tells you "I was in prison because I refused to standby while a cop mercilessly beat the crap out of 98 year old blind woman, so I attacked him to defend her." The only part of that sentence you are going to hear is "I was in prison..."
TheTerminator2004
They did it because it saves them the trouble of having to think up a backstory for the PC. Also, it's traditional in an Elder Scrolss game to start the PC off in jail. That's pretty much it.
Sypron
They start all their characters in prison, not just in morrowind and oblivion. It also happened in arena (although, that was the castle dungeons) and probably in Daggerfall. You also start in prison because they like to absolve the characters past. If they start the game with you as a smith's apprentice it implies you are training to be a smith. Being in prison implies nothing. Only that you were in Cyrodiil, then you committed a crime, or you were accused of a crime. Questions like "Why does the emperor die?" are pretty damn pointless, its just part of the story. ninja_lord666
Thanks to everyone for their poisonless responses. :thumbsup:Ask a stupid question; get a stupid answer. I'm surprised you haven't gotten one yet, so here it is: The pc is in jail because he's a pedophile. If the player makes a female pc, then the pc got a sex change before going to jail, so that when he became someone's "wife" he wouldn't "technically" be gay. Like I said, the pc is in jail because he's a pedophile. Escape or spend the rest of your life in jail? I'd escape. The captain dies from AIDs.Would you wear the blood soaked armour of someone with AIDs? I know I wouldn't.
OneoftheLost
The captain dies from AIDs.Would you wear the blood soaked armour of someone with AIDs? I know I wouldn't. ^| LOL. In all seriousness, the only reason you can take her sword is because its part of a mini type quest. You can take Glenroys as well, and when you talk to Baurus he talks about putting them in some sort of Blade Hall of fame.

WoogieMonster
Whoa, calm down, Ninja was just kidding. There is no need for the verbal assault. To be fair, anyone that ends a post with... "To whom it may concern:If you are answering to abuse my lack of understanding, to add to your number-of-posts, or to just be a rude, bored, piece of s***, then please do everyone on this forum a favor and DON'T!" ... is kinda asking for it. If that is how you will respond every time you get a reply you do not like or a joke you can not take, maybe an interweb forum is not a place you should be hanging out. Of course you have your right to be weary because there are people who spend all their time flaming, but Ninja is not one of those people (although he is pretty silly sometimes) and as I said, it is pretty obvious that he was just joking.
