lessthan3
I saw a bunch of requests for mods that make the night darker, but I really think what is more needed is darker dungeons. Give us a reason to use torches if we're not playing as the furries. And that brings us to point #2. Brighter torches. They don't light up enough as it is. If we're going to have darker dungeons, you need to be able to see things without being right ontop of them.Light is a funny thing, it travels quite far. A well place candle or two can light up an entire room. (moderately anyway) So, that needs to happen. One thing that would also be great is if you could drop, or throw a torch and it would still burn. That way you could light up larger rooms, and not have to worry about choosing between the torch and a shield. It would also be nice with a way to make torches, there's an awful lot of linen wrap lying around the world, combine it with firewood and some kind of oil or resin perhaps? (I don't know if there's any oil/resin/wax junk item/ingredient already in the game) But that's really secondary, the important thing is making it valuable for the player to have a torch. After that we can see about making companions wield torches etc. etc. Good idea? Anyone know how to do this once the creation tool is released?
kitsuneshoujo
Good idea! When I did Bleak Falls the first time, i was wondering why I needed a torch since it was almost like daylight in there. Also I am all for using the random "fluff" items in the game for crafting. Bandages from the linen wrappings, torches from the firewood.. or make a campfire from the wood! Require a kettle for cooking a bowl for making soup... lessthan3
True, it was a bit disappointing that the fireplaces where you could cook were already set up. I was expecting that you could build your own fireplace and place it around the world, sort of like Red Dead Redemption.

InuyashaFE
Yeah this would be great as an extension to the crafting system, make torches craftable, be able to set up cooking pots and things like that. We should definitely be able to make campfires, we can already get firewood, why can't we use it for one of the most obvious things people would use it for? griffonwing
There is also the Dwarven Oil that you get from the spiders and dwarven spheres. I am all for this mod. The lanterns should be able to be used as well.
Rennn
Direct, bright lighting doesn't go far. A candle would have a very small radius of truly bright light. However, a single candle (as you said) does light up a large space with a less noticeable glow. Ideally torches would have an 'inner bright' zone where things are quite well-lit, and an 'outer bright' area which is much larger but where the light is much dimmer. As it is right now, torches really light up quite a small area in a constant gradient. BTW, torch crafting with dwarven oil or troll fat would be very helpful, as right now torches are very rare. Bethesda probably did this intentionally, as in the vanilla game you don't need torches much. In Oblivion you found on average 2-3 torches per cave (in some you found none, in others you found 5+, so 2-3 average), whereas in Skyrim it seems like I find a single torch per 3-4 dungeons, if I'm lucky. If torches could be crafted, that would fix this and make darker dungeons much more viable. Ideally, you would be able to use either troll fat or dwarven oil, along with either a piece of firewood or a wooden stick (new item) to make a torch. Campfires would also be nice, but those would be a bit trickier to implement, since with torches the crafting system only needs to be modded, but to make dynamic burning firewood it seems like you'd need a lot of time and skill. The crafting bit should go into a crafting mod to keep mods modular in their functionality / design and keep incompatibilities at a low but other than that great idea.
