Things i Personally liked and disliked about Skyrim

Ok i wont bash the game, i will just name the things i disliked followed by the things i found really good.

Disliked:

1 - UI.

2 - Ragdolls & Physics (i had so much fun in Oblivion with the Ragdolls, also Giants make me fly miles away... and i got killed twice by picking up random misc objects)

3 - Character Animations (Jumping and Running, they feel and look bad).

4 - Textures, (they kinda look dated and low Resolution).

5 - Character Creation Options (is it just me or Oblivion pretty much had twice the options in face creation? i remember an interview with Todd where he mentions the new options were improved a lot...)

6 - No Dodge Perk and no Hand to Hand Perks (Hand to Hand is still there, but i would liked to see Perks for this.

7 - No Snow Foot Prints ( i was expecting a little more Detail )

8 - AI (its Kinda Lacking, in small places i always get my path blocked by my own companions who refuses to move, or Enemy Ai sometimes just stands there allowing me to bash them till Death, in Oblivion all NPC will move instantly as soon as you start pushing them)

Liked:

Animal Diversity ( i just played like 15 hours of gameplay but so far i liked the diversity for hunting, awsome!)

Story (its awsome so far)

Game Performance (runs on perferct on UltraDetail on my PhenomII 810, 6GbDDR3, HD5770 on 1280x1024 Resolution)

InGame Work & Cooking (AWSOME)

Dungeons (no more repetitive Dungeons and Caves like in Oblivion)

Dragons, Werewolves and Vampires appearing in the game

Perks instead of Stats (Finally! i am tired of Stats in all RPGs where you can become as strong as a Mammoth with little or no muscle, Stats just dont make sense to me)

Thats pretty much it, in my own Personal opinion Oblivion is a better game overall... Skyrim shines in some things while in others it feels rushed or lazy (Textures, UI, Animations, Character Creation Options), I feel Skyrim is a small upgrade over Oblivion, but not the Revolution i was expecting.

I liked the game and having fun, it was worth every peny i payed but i did honestly expect much much more, cant wait for the Creation Kit to start moddifying the game.

I'll jump in on this one

First off, I don't care if this game is an rpg or what ever, makes no difference to me. It is what I see on the screen and how it plays, the details and whether the games sucks me in or not, that is...makes we want to play it.

I can agree with you on most of your post. About the only real thing I am very disappointed on is character creation. This issue has been brought up a lot. I affectionately call my character the 'dumpster warrior'. We seem to be stuck with middle aged base avatars and I think the option to make you character young to older should have been available. Further, he has no personality, very 'lifeless' as it were. I went back to Oblivion: Elder Scrolls and took a look at my warrior in the game and he at least had some personality. If he was just standing, he would look around, he would look at anyone talking to him, and even frown or bust out with a big smile sometimes. A little detail perhaps and yes, I am being nit picky, but a little detail that gives some life to your character. My dumpster warrior just stands there, no expression, blinks his eyes and responds to nothing until you move him. Further, the hair looks liked they dumped their heads in a vat of grease...LOL. I also very annoyed that we can't mix and match clothes or armor. Example would be, just wearing pants, and change the shirt, or just go shirtless, instead we are stuck with 'outfits'. They may claim it is to save on resources...sorry, not buying that. Other games have done it quite well, even on the console platform. And lastly, the human avatar mesh and texures are not up to par with the rest of the game, very poor human models in my opinion. One would think that by now, decent human models with good detail would be produced. I refer to the human models in games such as W2, or Fable 3 as an example. high detail and good skin textures.

I'm not too crazy about the UI either, but am learning it as I go. It is obviously geared for the console, oh well.

I agree with the animations, a bit of a let down on that one, especially when in a fight. I think the animations from Withcer 2 are far better, more detailed and graceful if I can use the word. To date, the best sword play animations I have seen are from (and I hate to admit this) are from Fable 3. If they can do it on a console platform, they should be able to do it here I would think. The walking animation in this game makes my warrior look like he is walking with a stick up...errr..well, you get the idea. Not a smooth walk, very rigid and even the running animation leaves a lot to be desired. And I was surprised that we didn't get a 'roll' animation to roll out of a situation if we wanted.

No footprints in the snow? Yeah, I have to agree on this too, again, a minor detail, but an important one. Going back to Fable 3, you had footprints in the sand, and they even went to the detail of the sound of you walking or running. To add to this detail, the game even knew if you had boot/shoes on or in barefeet. With the shoes, you heard a 'clumping' sound and in barefeet, you heard the soft sound of your feet. There was even sand being kicked up by your feet as you walked.

Before anyone jumps on me about Fable 3, no, I was not crazy about the game, but I was impressed with the little details that they put into the game. And they had good looking human models, unlike this game and so did Witcher 2.

I too have many issues with my companion getting in the way, and have blasted her many times, but she keeps getting back up...LOL! But it does annoy me when she keeps getting in my way.

OK, that being said. I still like this game despite the issues just mentioned and I am now starting to enjoy it. The environment is beautiful and I love the environmental sounds you hear when out playing or exploring. I am one that likes to play with minimal armor or clothing, I am that 'barefoot warrior' after all, but I have to tell you that this game has the best winter environments I have ever seen. Looking at it and hearing it makes me cold, and I do want my warrior in warm clothing. I'm on ultra settings and totally enjoying exploring in this game, Bethesda did a wonderful job on this aspect. I like seeing all the animals running around and the the rivers and lakes, water falls in particular are awesome.

I am enjoying the storyline so far and have no complaints there. Love the music and the voice overs. I differ with you on the textures. I think the textures are very good in this game with exception of our human warrior's. I am a detail person and I do enjoy creating my own textures for my own work, so I do look at this item very closely. The texture details on the environment, the houses, weapons, forts, etc are quite good in my opinion. I still think the textures were a bit better in Witcher 2, but that's just me.

So far, I have not had any issues with game performance. I did resent having to go to a third party (Steam) to activate my game. I want Steam completely out of the picture if I choose to do so and that should have been an option.

Bottom line so far, I do like this game and I will get many hours of enjoyment out of it. I feel that it is worth the money I paid for it. I will wait for the modders to come out with their work and I too will be waiting for the Tool Set.

But I did learn one lesson out of this game. I will never again get excited about a new game, especially of this genre. I will wait till anything new comes out before I buy it and I will never pre-order anything again. I got burned on DA2 and all the hype about this game was a bit over the top. The only one that really met most expectations was Witcher 2, and I didn't even buy it until after it was released. I think the game industry better keep an eye on those folks over in Poland.

All of that being said, I'm having a good time with this one.

Yeah, i was expecting MUCH MORE from Skyrim but is still a damn good game, the only thing that really dissapointed me the most was the character customization options... honestly, Todd promised an IMPROVED version in Skyrim.

But it dosent matters, as soon as they give us tools to mod the game people will fix Bethesda Lazyness... at the end of the day it is US Modders that had to give life to games like this.

Cant wait to see those high resolution mods, animal mods, bodies and faces.

Now that it has been a few days and folks have gotten into the game, I thought I'd bump this up front. I think the OP made some good points and I added my kinda sorta review. Give some of your thoughts on the game so far. Even if you don't agree with the OP or me, just don't be rude. I am now into it about six hours and at level 9...and enjoying it despite the issues mentioned here.

I'm disappointed by the total uneveness of the graphics. Some are STUNNING, like dragons. Others, like walls - they look like they haven't changed much at all since Oblivion. Come on. PCs should enjoy the ability to have high texture walls I could stare and marvel at. I mean, I see walls all the time. I little high def would go a long way toward eye candy.

The hardcoding of certain keys - ARG. If I can use the arrow keys to move, why not manipulate the map, pick locks. Bethesda, if you played your game on a PC with a KEYBOARD, you would see how frustrating this stuff is - more so b/c it was SO SIMPLE TO FIX. Thankfully the modding community did that, and the game has been out for less than a week. Why couldn't B, right out of the box?

Some other minor things - if you knock something over in the story, they comment on it, which is AWESOME. But no one ever puts it back? days later? um...

Yet, there is no getting around it - I clocked in 40 hours and am enjoying this game a lot. Well done, but iron out the edges, and don't cheap on the PC market. PCs and the modding community is what makes your games legendary.

Bethesda spent so much time creating these amazing landscapes full of beauty and... then force us to go through endless, mind numbing, repetitive tunnels, cellars, and caves. :/

I would like to see more above ground related things. I mean, a dungeon with a single linear path isn't all that fun. Fun, but not quite as much fun as it could be. I mean, it's basically: Go into sneak, walk, see enemy, shoot enemy, wait for others to stop looking, walk forward, slit throat, pick lock on chest, get loot, walk out via a back tunnel that just happened to appear.

I dunno... it seems like they're trying to hard to scare us. I'd rather be sticking with the story and fighting Imperials/Stormcloaks and Dragons instead of crawling through bones and grit to snipe at blind elves, senile hags, spiders, and other things bound to give me unwanted nightmares.

So that's one point... less spelunking more slash at Imperial scum.

Make werewolves better. Better in many senses. Better in that I don't die in 2 hits from mages. Just make them better for that reason. More "noticeable". People telling me I smell like a wet dog is a good step. Now take it further. It should be that, over time, people notice that you are what you are and treat you differently. Not so far as to attack you like they would a vampire, but some would treat you more hostile. When you get hit, make it growls/barks not girly squeals. When you're transforming, make it so that I don't get ripped to pieces as I'm doing it... I mean, I use that form as a last resort. Kind of worthless if I'm dead before the hair has reached my balls. When you first finish, you roar... why not howl?

Back to the noticeable werewolf traits... maybe elongated canines? Yellow, glowing eyes? You look... darker. Skin could get darker or something to make you seem less human. Wilder hair maybe?

The low quality of some armor... Cicero's armor is appalling. I'm not talking about design, I'm talking about the fact that it looks really low res. A lot of the armors look flat. The buckles and belts seem painted on. Huge turn off for me.

--

Side quests are too short. Dark Brotherhood? One second I'm waking up to a certain member of a certain group of bloodthirsty assassins dressed in spiderman tights (seriously?) next the story is over. "Bye and thanks for the adventure! Here's your honorary horse and jester outfit!"

Turns out the silliest looking thing in the game (love the armor by the way... seriously) is the best armor a good thief can get. Hell, if I wanted, I could use Cicero's gear forever... too bad the low res on it turned me off to the point where I had to go hunt down similarly enchanted equips, break them down, and make my own "cool looking" set of armor. *sigh*

Oh and the Companion quests are over hecka fast too.

--

Would LOVE more weapons... spears, crossbows, throwing daggers, flails, noose, etc... something more. I doubt everyone used a sword, ax, and hammer in those days. Takes away from my immersion.

--

The UI. Nuff said.

Stupid companions. Who you can't spec to your liking... I mean, I'm TRYING to sneak through a cave filled to the brim with hags, spiders, trolls, creepy goblin elf things, zombies (forgot about those in my above statement...), skeletons (these too!), etc... and my stupid companion goes all LEEROOOOY JEEEEENKINS! and rushes in causing me to facepalm over and over and the afforementioned creepies start spazzing out, running willy nilly, and end up bumping into me, giving me away, and giving me a nice dagger in the face.

Even if I don't get found out, I can't even use my trusty bow. Nope, stupid, sexy Lydia just HAS to run in front of every one of my arrows... goddammit. If she weren't so nerd-gasmy I would kill her myself... anyway... this forces me to go up close and personal with the undead... with my butter knife... Great. Didn't anyone tell you lightly armed/armored thieves plain stink at brawling matches? Unless you have some sweet top-tier gear (thankfully I finally got it...), you're not likely to survive.

--

Fencers... I'm a thief... I steal things... a lot of things... everything I can get my hands on... It seems like everytime I enter a town or city... I walk out with about 20 of each type of jewelery, a few giant handfuls of gems, a few choice weapons and armor, and enough potions to flood a small continent... I go over to my local fence and... he has 20 gold for my thousands of gold coins worth of trinkets. Great.

There are still a few things I would like to see changed... but overall I really enjoy this game. Apart from the too many dungeons, short story-lines for side quests, and low res armors... the rest are just small annoyances I can get used to. Overall this is an amazing game and I'm just being a grumpy gamer right now.

EDIT: Forgot... HAIR! They STILL don't give us a ton of hairstyles. The hair still looks fake and made out of tangled string.

Cons:

Lack of a variety of spells and spellmaking.

Smaller than Oblivion. A big chunk of Skyrim is the waters up north. Mountains also make up a lot of the land.

Linear progression in dungeons and certain places. Ie; Throat of the world.

A lot of the shouts are pretty useless.

Summoned creature often get in my way and I can't push them so I have to re cast them often. They can push me though...

Destruction spells cost too much magicka.

Not enough armor slots. Also, I would like it if my armor was listed in a row from the top so I don't have to scroll through so many items to find what I'm wearing.

Sorry that I shortened your post.. But thanks a lot for giving me a great laugh... I had totally forgotten about Leroy Jenkins

And, I agree with you on the hair. Even vanilla Oblivion's hair looked better, shinier - more "hair-like".

Oh god this game could be so much better.

I waited for epic new monsters, awesome side quests, heck loads of weapons and armor, I was excited about the new magic system, I thought the "kill cam" idea was awesome.

What did i get?

Same freaking dungeons over and over again, filled with some annoying zombies and spiders, only 4 types of weapons - maces, axes, swords and bows, and the only variety there is different looks and different names, they all feel the same.

The magic system ? Bs, not nearly enough spells and no way to combine them. The kill cam is just repetitive and boring. Side quests are not as long as i hoped, and most of them sum up in go there kill that give me that.

Animations are s***, and not only the characters animation, its even the monster animation.

some of the terrain make your horse or other creatures go half floating, which kills the immersion. combat system still feels not tactic enough, and still lacks the feeling of fighting with a sword and not tickling you enemies to death with a feather. Overall the experience is great, graphics are awesome ( except the places where bethesda got lazy, but modders will fix that up) the environment is well done, but all that snow is depressing and ugly looking.

I still like this game a lot, but it lacks so much.....
