  1. 1. Does the Inventory System Need an Overhaul

    • No, I like it how it is
    • It could use a couple of tweaks
    • I love what they've done but it still needs a lot of work
    • It's total s***, scrap it and start again
    • I don't really have an opinion, yet for some reason I still feel the need to vote

korenogamer's post on inventory sub-categories reminded me of some thoughts on the inventory system that I had, I posted them there but I think they are really good ideas and it would be good to have a full thread dedicated inventory make-over ideas. Here's a couple of mine but if you have an idea post it here.

User Created Favorites Sub-Folders

Having sub folders in the favorites menu could be really handy if you want to separate potions/spells/shouts/weapons etc, or if you want to keep together certain types of gear like different types of magic spells and gear, elemental categories, battle vs civil gear etc. I find that the favorites menu really quickly gets cluttered, and an alphabetical listing just isn't helpful, at least have it listed by type. But folders would be awesome

Multiple Items Assigned to a Single Hot-key

I have found that the Hot-keys are almost useless for anything other than potions since there are always too many changes you need to make at one time, like if you want to be able to easily switch between dual axes, spell/shield combo or bow and arrow, that takes 5 hot-key slots, and I don't know about most people but I tend not to use the slots past 5 or 6 in the heat of battle because you have to take your hand off wasd, find the key and then get back, which in the dark can take a couple a second or two which you may not have to spare. I would like to be able to have 3 slots for potions and 3 slots for weapon combos, not individual weapons. It would also be nice if 7 and 8 could be assigned to total outfit changes so I can easily jump between street clothes and battle gear. Perhaps I'm in the minority here but I really like to have charmed fancy clothes and necklaces and circlets and stuff with personality buffs for hanging in the cities and towns while having another armor set for battles and caving and stuff, and if I have space in my inventory, another for stealth activities. There's no practical way to assign this to hot-keys now but if you could simply assign multiple items to the one hot-key the hot-keys will become useful again.

Menu Separation of Favorite Items

Being an Alchemist, I make a lot of potions just to try and advance in rank and one will usually want to sell most of them. But you always have to progress carefully through the list to make sure you don't sell the stuff you want to keep. This problem is in all the categories, like if you have multiple kinds of armor for different situations you have to somewhat carefully go through the menu to pick out what you want to keep and what you want to sell. If favorited items were pinned to the top and separated by a line or something, this problem would be solved. If combined with the favorite menu User Folder idea, you would be able to favorite stuff like soul gems and lock picks so you don't sell them by accident, but they are also tucked away in an unused folder so they don't clutter up your favorites menu.

These are just a couple of ideas, I don't know how ambitious they are since I'm not a modder but I think they would all dramatically change the flow of the game for the better. I personally think there's nothing like the feeling of effortless micro managing your gear to deal with tough situations in varied and inventive ways and without a decent inventory system your ability to do this is severely diminished, like imagine being able to poison an arrow to shoot a dragon with weakness to shock poison, then strafing out of the way and equipping your shock spells to bring him down, then charging in with a couple of swinging axe to finish him off, all without pausing to access a single menu because everything is already neatly set up. I love what they have done with the inventory, it's a big step in the right direction, now we just need to take a few steps more to really make it work fluidly and enjoyably.

To add on to your ideas, I think the ability to define a weapon and armor set should be allowed which would allow a total loadout switch with ideally only one click. I have my civy clothing, dragon fighting armor, stealth armor ect... and it is very cluttering to have it all on the favorites tab but at the same time very tedious to go through the inventory tabs every time i want to switch. That's actually really good, I was thinking you would just hover and assign each item to the same hot-key, but I realized there would be a problem of the game not knowing which weapon to put in your left and right hand. Doing it your way one could choose before hand, name the load-out something, then favorite/assign the load-out. Just so long as you're able to not change everything at once so if you want you can have a weapon/amulet/ring set that doesn't change your armor and vice-verca. Also by having named sets they can be saved in your favorites, and you can replace them on the hot-keys if you want more potions on your belt for a while or whatever and then put them back without having to re-assign everything. Also I was thinking that if you accidentally assigned an incompatible thing to a hot-key, like 2 of something or a potion with some armor, it could cause a problem that would need to be caught, but your way solves that too.

I really feel the same. A total revamp is something we need.

But for me right now, the biggest issue is the favourites menu. Everything is unsorted and its hard to find what you're looking for especially if you have a lot of stuff added to the system.

We need a better interface and selection method for the favourites and it needs to be categorized by type. Then you get sub categories for your items if needed or just your items.

Check image below for my suggestion.

Love it. I had felt this game was missing something in it's lack of radial menu's. I still think you ought to be able to provide your own labels and put whatever you want in each category. You had the word favorites in the middle, maybe that could be made into a button that cycles between a few category types, like <Type> (basically what you had) <Element> (sorted by what offensive magic effects they hold, i.e. shock, fire, ice, poison, stun, flee, soul trap, etc) <School> (Sorted by which school of magic the item uses, i.e. Destruction, Restoration, Illusion, Conjuring, etc) <Hot-keys> (So you can get to your hot-keys while the game is paused basically) <Custom 1> <Custom 2>.

If you like the idea, could you make up a series of images showing what it might look like. I'm not much of a modder but I think I'd like to get into it for this game, and for me this would be the first thing I'd like to work on.

I would like to see like under armor section the inventory subdivided again into Light Medium and heavy then again into like shoes/ chest/ helm/ hands/ ect. same for weapons one handed/ 2 handed/ swords/ daggers/ maces/ bows/ ect.

and how about a mod for removing the weight from all the items i like that one.

i really just want a small change to the favorites menu.

when i tap "q" to open it i want it to bring up the menu as it is now. but i want the "a" and "d" keys to cycle thru categories like "weapons" , "magic","potions", "apparel".

also a small idea: some items only appear when i go to the specific sub menu and some only appear on the primary "favorites" menu.

that would make me a very happy man.
