freemanstretten
It's getting REALLY annoying when enemies seem to mystically move out of my arrows way as I release. I can watch a guy perform his rounds... wait with the arrow ready... and when I release, he just happens to move and an arrow wasted (and he is then partially alerted). I'm talking like, he just "happens" to turn left as my arrow whizzes by where his head is supposed to be (or body). Or they just stop moving right as I let go. OR, they start MOVING as I let go when they were just standing there! It's happening too much to be coincidence. So I started trying to vary my timing because I thought I was having bad luck... nope, release quick or wait longer, same thing. Now, it's even worse when enemies are semi-alerted to me. I watched a skeleton glide sideways (I would say strafe, except he didn't move his legs) when I shot at him. I understand the enemy dodging arrows when fighting fully alert (even though it's annoying because they don't dodge when the arrow gets near them, but RIGHT when I release the mouse button). But when an enemy is only semi-alerted, i.e. they don't know where I'm shooting from, they shouldn't know to dodge either. I have had many successful snipes with the bow, no doubt... but this swerving to avoid my arrows happens over 50% of my shots easily, and is getting really obvious and annoying. PsYchotic666Joker
you just need to learn to lead the target is all
vertex23
^ If anything, Archery is too easy...=/ Just wait until your stealth gets to around 50 and you can have people walk right next to you, move you via collision as you sit next to a torch and just shoot him for 3x damage at point blank range. Yeah, this is just silly. Early on I was excited about stealth planning how much I would train stealth and the stealth improvement perks only to realize once I reached 40 I basically became as stealthy as I'd ever want to be. If I continued I am sure I would be pretty much invisible, it feels too powerful already!
freemanstretten
Ah, I know how to lead them... and I do. As I said, I'm doing well except when they just cheeze out on me. Leading them is fine, except when they stop just before they normally would (after watching their movements). Or when they just stop and then I shoot and instead they just start moving. I'm serious... it's happening too often to be coincidence. I would like someone to see what kind of code is in there for "arrow avoidance" or whatever.... I know, I know "you just need to get better" is what I expect to be the response, but I'm very good at the archery in Oblivion and so far in this game too. My archery is at 61 and my stealth is at 56.I walked around the corner once and bumped nose to nose with a necromancer... backpedalled and he didn't notice me (broken)... and yes, shooting him then was no problem at that range. Max3078
It boils down to the animations, There should have been a hint/delay before he/it moves and stops. Do you just abruptly stop walking or do you sort of slow down?
freemanstretten
You're probably right about the animation thing. I suspect they're not loading or whatever...The skeleton that dodged my arrow that one time slide very fast to the side while he was standing there (no animation on the legs, just stiff sliding to the side). That was a huge wtf moment for me. I notice that the issue happens mostly when I'm sniping people from a distance, like watch towers or castle walls. I noticed the same behaviour in Oblivion as well. In Skyrim I was sniping a necromancer woman in the distance, and she took a step as I released and then stopped one step away, just enough to "dodge" (I rolled my eyes in an "of course' manner) and the arrow didn't startle her (if flew by into the distance). So I shot again... and she stepped one step again! So... I ended up getting about half way closer before trying again and was able to hit her (she began moving but I was too close for the arrow to miss). I should try and post some video of it... it's really funny in a slapstick sort of way - like someone moving constantly to avoid things hitting them while not being aware of what's going on around them, heh. Loving the game otherwise. Edited November 14, 2011 by freemanstretten
freemanstretten
Hahaha... I just tested it against an enemy running in the distance down a hill... in this case this one was aware of me. But every arrow I shot he dodged. Every one. I led him down his current path and the moment I released my mouse button he shifts his direction slightly to avoid the arrow. He basically serpentined down the hill with me shooting. I got three shots off before he got close. Even slowing down time doesn't help, he just dodged slower! Haha. It wasn't that the arrow missed him and he kept running past where it hit on his current pathing... that I could chalk up to poor marksmanship on my part. If he ran in a straight line and I fired while leading theoretically he should run into the shot, or at least through the area I was aiming at... except he turns slightly to avoid it at a distance he would have difficulty "knowing" where I was aiming. The game has to know in code (via ray tracing?) where my arrow is going to land the instant I release the mouse button... so they just programmed it to make the characters move out of the way. I'll work with it and will attempt to get some video of it happening. Cheers!
