ToyTrains1
I've started having a problem launching FO4 and thought that perhaps someone here might be able to help. It doesn't matter if I launch from the program itself or via FO4SE, the symptoms are the same. If I just launch the game, the screen blanks and I then get the Windows (7) waiting cursor -- the spinning circle. It never loads and I have to use Task Manager to close Fallout4.exe. However, if I have the Steam client open on the desktop, the game loads flawlessly via the program or via FO4SE. I've had Steam check the local game cache and it's fine. Clearly, having Steam open on the desktop is key, but why? Is anyone else seeing this? Is there any cure? Thanks for any help.
steve40
Try uninstalling and reinstalling steam.
ToyTrains1
You're aware, I hope, that uninstalling the Steam client also uninstalls all the Steam games. Are you really recommending that? Seems kind of drastic.
steve40
Really? OK, see if there's a "repair" option for the Steam installation.

ToyTrains1
It was a good idea but makes no difference. Online or offline, the Steam client still needs to be open on the desktop for Fallout 4 to run. Quite frankly, this one has me stumped, especially since it used to work just fine before this week. What changed, I don't know, but something surely did. I even went so far as to wipe out Fallout 4 and have Steam reinstall it. Even without mods, with a clean install, it behaves in this same peculiar way.

At least for your circumstances. This does not occur here for me.So; What could it be that effects this game only?IS there another game you can test with you own ? OR is this completely this game only ? An open windows indicates for you, the steam overlay is setting president there, while not here.So list the basics of the outline.OS. Equipment used. IS every thing been updated as far as you know with the system less steam as we know that already. ? Direct launch works. and this still occurs when you alt-tab out to minimize the windows? ToyTrains1
It is Fallout 4 only. Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, Oblivion, Skyrim (what can I say, I have good taste in games  ) -- they all launch and play with no problems. This is a Fallout 4 problem only, and it was working properly from the day it was released until this past week. AFAIK, there was no update to Fallout 4; the Steam client, I'm not so sure. rayhne
You are not alone. I was playing the game with no problem just a couple days ago and now I keep getting an error when I try to load the game that Fallout 4 has stopped working.
Purr4me
steam has been updated so there might be a problem with the overlay resources in it.some sort of disconnect with every ones graphics drivers is causing a rucas. Not too sure, but you might be able to fix the issue by changing the desk top display settings lower ?
