I fell about 30 feet, not super high at all, and the thing died, threw me off, and I rolled all the way down the damn hill and died at the bottom. Bloody horse. Went back to the Tundra and fought a dragon. Horse came back, was just trotting a long and then saw me fighting the dragon with Lydia. I swear to you it turned around and walked the other way. When I first saw how far one of my missions wanted me to walk ( this was before I knew about the wagons ) I decided it would be in my best interest to buy a horse. After taking her off a ledge that was steeper then I thought, she went splat. Since then I refuse to buy a horse, they really are a waste of money from what I can tell.
