Why do I have a party of four? (Myself, Lydia, Esbern, and Delphine?)

So I'm working on the "Alduin's Wall" quest at the moment. I reached the Sky Haven Temple, with Lydia in my party, so now I have Lydia, Esbern, and Delphine all in my party. They follow me if I decide to do other quests aside from Alduin's Wall, making it much easier to complete some dungeons, etc. since I've got Lydia and Delphine shooting arrows, and Esbern using magic to back me up whenever I need them.

Is this intentional, to have these guys follow me around wherever I go? If I complete the Alduin's Wall quest, will I lose the two of them? I thought that you could only have one Follower maximum? I decided to do the "Forbidden Legend" quest, which led me to Saarthal, and so I also ended up doing the "Under Saarthal" quest. While there, I briefly had about seven people in a tiny little dungeon because the latter quest added a teacher from the College of Winterhold as well as a few students, which was pretty hilarious and also a bit tough to navigate.

Should I keep these guys for now or ditch them, since it might be making it slower for me to gain experience if they're stealing too many kills?

Regarding dragons: On a side note, when I arrived at the Sky Haven Temple, a dragon was attacking me. And then the locals starting attacking me. I thought that they would attack the dragon since it posed a greater threat at the moment, than I did?

I already mentioned how I got multiple followers. It's the Alduin's Wall quest, which it tells you to go to Sky Haven Temple. I already had Lydia, so when I reached the temple, I got two more followers. Now I have a party of four. If I get a dog, and I keep my horse, I have six people then. Pretty epic group, heh.

Aha! That dragon is scripted!

My story was like this.

On the way to Alduin's Wall I passed by a mining settlement that had a trouble of some kind in their mine. Ok I'll do that later I thought and just when I passed the mine a dragon attacked. Me and Lydia fought with the dragon for a while and then suddenly it flew away for some distance. "Come back!" I yelled and rushed after it. When I went over the top of a small hill I saw it battling what looked like a village. "Aha. Now I have allies!" I thought and charged into the village after the dragon. And then I quickly succumbed to the attacks of the dragon and a lot of very hostile townsfolk...

I've heard variants of this from a couple others so it must be scripted. Very well done Bethesda I say. :)

I don't know if the dragon was scripted. Perhaps there's just a dragon that likes to hang around nearby? There are certainly areas that are defended by dragons, where dragons set up permanent residence, and this might be one of them. Also, these villagers, which I believe were the Forsworn, are particularly hostile people, so perhaps that would explain what happened.
