Wyrdfire
1. Extract your downloaded mod somewhere2. If all files are in a "Data" directory just drag its content into the Data folder of your New Vegas installation (it should be something like C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda\FalloutNV\Data)3. If it's just an .esp file it also goes inside the Data folder4. Start up the game, select "Data Files", then select the mods you want to see in the game5. Play :-)

Michlo
It is definitely best to use the mod manager. This makes it far easier to uninstall them should a problem arise. Read the instructions for the mod manager and then get into the habit of making OMOD files from either your zip files or the extracted files. I usually extract them since not all mod makes are diligent about their file structure. Good luck.
MooseTail
Recently Nexus came out with a thing called NMM (Nexus Mod Manager) its basically all of the Mod managers (Fallout NV, Fo3, Oblivion) all in one. And easier to use. I suggest you get it. I can't give you a link cause I'm lazy, but you can find it some place on the Forums. Oh Btw Its in beta so there might be some bugs.
