Any tuts on creating your own body mesh?

All - it's pretty much what the topic says.

I'm looking for ways to create a custom body/character mesh. (like how Nightasy did for his Jane Bod)

Some of you will probably wonder why I just can't use the bodyslide to tweak the CBBE to my liking, but suffice it to say that there were some limitations that really annoyed me; bodyslide is an awesome tool, so don't get me wrong.

Anyway, I have been searching for a tut/resources on this topic for FO4 but mostly came up empty handed.

It will be all the more sweet if I can just use the tools I have already; student version of Maya, 3D Studio, Blender, and other standard plugins.

Thanks in advance for any pointers and/or tips!

Hey demon - Thanks for the reply, and I had already checked out the nexus mod tut you linked - it is great stuff.

Anyway, from what little I understand about character mesh rigging/skinning in general, it works in a quite different way than how the armor/cloth meshes do. Or maybe I am wrong, but I have not been able to validate my thought from any online sources so far.

Maybe it's because FO4 modding is still in an early stage (relatively speaking) but I have not been able to find any information on how to create a custom body mesh. Obviously, veteran modders are already doing it (e.g., Jane Bod), but it feels as if it's intentionally hidden under the wrap.

The reason there aren't any tutorials for creating a body mesh is that it is a very advanced process that takes a long time to learn. There are some very long tutorials on basic character design but that is for a simple low poly cartoon-like character. Here's one for Blender and I think the entire tutorial is like 72 videos.

You did say you have Maya so I would suggest using that instead of Blender since Maya is the standard for the game industry, 3Ds Max is standard for everything else. Blender has controls that are very unlike any other program used in the industry so it would be a waste of time. Zbrush is another good program for modeling organics and is very good at modeling detailed clothing. My personal preference is Max but Maya would do just as well.

@Dizzaster -- As you mentioned, I expected the whole custom body creation process to be nothing short of arduous.

I'm not really concerned about the organic modelling part, as I wasn't planning on creating a character body from scratch. I will probably use a free tool such as DAZ Studio to create a body mesh and export it to Maya. Where I am mainly seeking for some guidance is how to take that mesh (FDX, NIF or whatever format) and skin/rig it properly in a way that it would work in FO4.

You can't create anything in Daz other than a few primitives. Like Poser, all you can do in Daz is pose models that were made by others and are copyrighted against any use other than renders of it.

The easiest way to import a body mesh into game is with BodySlide. It takes only two clicks to rig it and create skin partitions. There are tutorials online for the BodySlide.

@Dizzaster -- I could be wrong, but I wouldn't be in violation of any copyrights for as long as the mesh is for my personal use only. Besides, I only mentioned DAZ as just one of few options from which I get an experimental mesh.

To go back to the main issue here; are you saying that any custom body mesh can be easily turned into FO4 compatible character mesh using BodySlide? And by "any custom body mesh", I mean any humanoid mesh that does not have any rigging/skin partition information associated to it. It would only have vertices, polygons, and maybe even texture. Nothing more.

True, you can do whatever you want for your own use. You just can't distribute the mesh or textures to others.

Yes. BodySlide's Outfit Studio can import any obj file (export it from Max in Blender format) and rig it to the CBBE body reference, then export it in FO4 nif format.
