Problems with launching XCOM 2 Editor

I've also discovered another issue with installed mods and their Config.INI files.

I think it might be related with both Steam tracking of updates **and** how the new ModBuddy deals with XComGame.u(+pk) to allow pre-allocated overrides via external Mod scripts.

It seems each folders are being re-scanned and if that process finds any '''CUSTOM''' ini(s) -- it will automatically re-write these files with the default(s) it has on LOG. Duh!

Mind you, i normally have a few edits made in such files to personnalize whatever.. and thus -- if we don't have proper backups, all these settings get lost in the weird updating steps. AFAIK, there's no way to tell if & when such auto-fixes get rolled out. Maybe it's hooked to the Verify/Cache or anything else introduced by SG + SDK changes.

So today i tried to fix it again, i went through config files and i commented out any lines that referenced to brushes or foliage. But the result was what you would expect, it just didn't launch anyway, in fact, it just disappeared before it even got to the foliagebrush part.

Tried to verify tools cache too but there's no change there, just finds a bunch of files to replace and the editor still fails to load. At this point i can't even think of anything else that i can try.

I am currently in the process of clearing all traces and then reinstalling both the SDK and the game.. Slow process but it's better than just waiting 4-5 days for a reply from Firaxis / 2K.. Will let you know what the result is

That's appreciaed, i honestly dread having to do it since my internet isn't particularly fast. It would probably take at least a couple of days to redownload the entire sdk.

Meanwhile i've been Googling around and it seems this problem also happened to a mod or something called RenegadeX, i looked around their forums but the one thing they said fixed the issue, didn't fix it for me, which was this:

I've got a fix for you, just give me some time.

So I had the same problem. Yes, the SDK folder should be separate from the game folder. As for being stuck at "foliage" loading part, here is what worked for me.

Courtesy of Encrypt:
I have found a fix.

Step 1: Go to where you have placed the SDK files. Navigate to the 'Binaries' folder.

Step 2: Find 'UnrealEdCSharp.dll'

Step 3: Right click and go to Properties.

Step 4: At the bottom of the newly opened dialogue, it will say something about how it may be unsafe. Click the button to unblock it.

And voila, it works! You can now open the editor without any issues.

It seems that happens a lot with windows 8 so it might also apply to windows 10 for you guys. In my case i never even got the dialogue about the file being blocked to begin with, but i fiddled around with it and it just didn't do anything, i removed it and had steam redownload it by verifying the tool cache, fiddled around with the security settings or whatever in it, didn't do a thing.

i saw someone else say this:

as its a mat problem try back up and delete these files from UDKGame\Content then running the sdk again it will rebuild all the shaders for stuff that gets loaded (may take some time)

GlobalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.bin
GlobalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM5.bin
GlobalShaderCache-PC-OpenGL.bin
LocalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.upk
LocalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM5.upk
LocalShaderCache-PC-OpenGL.upk
RefShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM3.upk
RefShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM5.upk
RefShaderCache-PC-OpenGL.upk

So assuming the location for us is "XCOM 2 SDK\XcomGame\Content", i went ahead and moved them out of there and launched the editor again, now it compiled one of the caches again(i guess), only one the one called "GlobalShaderCache-PC-D3D-SM4" and when i wasn't looking it failed to launch again, so i assumed it did nothing but i tried to launch it again and now it's compiling more shaders, so i'll let you know if it does anything. This didn't work with the guy on that RenegadeX mod though, so i don't have many expectations.

Here's a link to the threads i read on the subject:

https://renegade-x.com/news.php?id=74859

http://renegade-x.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=136&t=74919

Next thing on my to-do list is removing the EditorLandscapeResources.upk under "XCOM 2 SDK\Engine\Content" which apparently references the foliage brush in question and have steam replace it by verifying the tool cache, and then after that i think i'll be completely out of ideas.

Edit:

Well that did nothing, the editor never finishes recompiling or whatever, so i just removed all the shader cashes and the .upk i mentioned, and verified tool cache and it didn't solve anything. It still just crashes at foliage.

Windows 7 here, having the same exact god damn problems. I resorted the extremes and reinstalled Windows 7, resulted in no changes whatsoever.

Also gotta note that I've tested using it on another computer too, to end up with the same results.

Also gotta note that I've reinstalled the SDK and base Xcom 2 about 3 times now.

reply from 2K support team

Hello Obelixdk,

Thank you for taking the time to reach out to 2K Support.

I believe I may have found a post by you on the Steam Workshop forums. (I was checking out the forums at the request of another modder who is currently having issues with the SDK. However I see that you are crashes instead of getting the application error that he is receiving.

I'm a big fan of the XCOM series myself so I can I fully understand how these sort of issues can be frustrating to experience and will give my best to assist in resolving this issue for you.

Judging by the issues you describe, I would suggest the following:

Verifying Game Cache (If I am correct that this was you, then you can skip this step)
· Load Steam
· From the Library section, right-click on the game and select “Properties” from the menu
· Select the “Local files” tab and click the “Verify integrity of game cache” button
· Steam will match the local files to the cloud files, and fix any errors it encounters

Reinstalling DirectX
· In your Steam folder for the game you’re having trouble with, there will be typically be a DirectX setup package.
· Example file path: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2\ _CommonRedist\DirectX\Jun2010
· Find and run DXSETUP.exe
· Reboot the computer (mandatory)

Reinstalling Vcredist
· Navigate to your game’s steam folder – there will be two Vcredist folders.
· C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2 \ _CommonRedist\vcredist\2012
· C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2 \ _CommonRedist\vcredist\2013
· Find and Run vcredist_x86.exe in both folders
· Find and Run vcredist_x64.exe in both folders
· Should the files already be installed, you will be prompted to either ‘uninstall’ or ‘repair’. Choose ‘repair’.
· Reboot the computer (mandatory)

Reinstalling Microsoft .NET
· Navigate to your game’s steam folder – there will be a DotNet folder.
· C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\XCOM 2 \ _CommonRedist\DotNet\4.5.1
· Find and Run NDP451-KB2872776-x86-x64-AllOS-ENU.exe
· Reboot the computer (mandatory)

Unplugging Gamepad Controllers
+ Certain Gamepad controllers may not be optimized or compatible with the game thus it could likely be a cause for issues experienced. Please unplug any connected Gamepad controllers from your PC and try again.

Does this continue to happen if you uninstall just Shen's Last Gift DLC?

Thank you for trying to send us your files. Unfortunately we are unable to open rar files for security reasons. If that doesn't resolve the issue, we will need to see your DXDiag and MSinfo files to perform a deeper investigation of your system specs.

This Support Article will show you how to access these files and attach them to your reply.

We would also like to ask you to resend the files that were in the .rar file.

Once I receive all your files, I'll investigate your issue and update your ticket.

Should you have any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

We will be in touch, Commander!

Ok, so I found a fix for the Editor not loading:

1. Find SteamApps\common\XCOM 2 SDK\XComGame\Config

2. Open "XcomEditorUserSettings.ini"

3. Change

[sourceControl]

Disabled=False

to

[sourceControl]

Disabled=True

..........And BINGO!

My Mod Package is not showing but atleast it opens now :D
