CTD upon startup, minimal load order. any ideas?

this is my first time getting into oblivion and i'm really looking forward to it.

i have very few mods installed, and i have the script extender installed and running, however once the scrip extender window pops up, the game stops responding, and is forced to quit

EDIT:(probably should add that i am running the GOTY edition through the steam launcher per ovse's instructions)

loot is showing no warnings or errors and i have cleaned all my masters, any ideas on what is still left to do?

i am also using windows 10, so i'm really hoping it will still work with that....

disclaimer: i am not new to modding, so i do not believe i have made any silly rookie mistakes, however i am brand new to modding oblivion, so there may be differences in procedure to mod an earlier Bethesda title

regardless, here is my load order:

looking forward to finally trying out oblivion for the first time, just need to sort out the whole "not starting" problem :D

So you cleaned Knights.esp, when you said you have cleaned your masters? Or something else? I would recommend verifying game cache through Steam, to have it redownload the original Knights.esp and others. You could then try to launch it before cleaning anything, because, for some odd reason, automatically cleaning Knights.esp causes the game to crash on startup for me, so I have not cleaned it automatically now. Sometimes it works, sometimes it does not, but if not cleaned, it always works. That might be something to try, I think.

Did the game launch without any mods? Did you try? Also, Steam version of Oblivion, with OBSE and all the mods, definitely work on Windows 10. Maybe there is something small to account for, but I cannot remember anything now. Where did you install the game? If you have it inside a Program Files directory, you could try creating a new Steam library directory outside the Program Files directories, maybe even on another physical drive or partition if you have one. You could also try setting obse_loader.exe to run as administrator if that makes any difference (the Construction Set Extender requires it, but then again, the CSE is not launched from within Steam). And yes, you are doing it the right way, the game needs to be launched from Steam.

If you use a mod manager, try uninstalling all mods, verifying game cache and then launching the base game without mods. OBSE should not make any difference, so you can leave it there, and not uninstall it.

Installing mods for Oblivion is not really that difficult compared to things like Skyrim, I think. But if you are coming from Morrowind, then I would say it is a lot easier thanks to all the tools available.

alright;

yes i cleaned knights esp, however it would not launch prior to cleaning either

i did not actually try to launch the game without mods.... so i can deffinatley try that...

game is installed on external SSD

i can try setting obse to run as admin, but i have not tried that yet

but for now i can do the whole "uninstall and reinstall slowly meathod" (i was planning on doing that, but it was 3am and i didnt have time :P)

thanks for the insight, and ill report back what i find

uhh, alright.

since i have a decent download speed, and i figured it would be easier to just re-install the game and start fresh.

after a 25ish minite download, i sarted a completly untouched game, no obse or anything.

and the game crashes upon startup

i have no clue now...

Okay. Now getting the base game to work might be a good place to start.

When you reinstalled the thing, was it a clean reinstall? As in, not leaving anything behind from the last one, in the steamapps\common\Oblivion folder?

You could try to delete Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Oblivion.ini, then opening the Oblivion launcher to generate a new one. Test if that works, as it might. It has apparently solved the thing for some users. Assuming that you did not do it already, that is.

If that does not work, install DirectX June 2010 redistributables here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109. DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANY OF THE EXTRA STUFF, uncheck them, you need just DX June 2010 setup and not the other things M$ apparently tries to make people download. The exe you download will first extract stuff to some folder you have to choose - open that folder and run DXSETUP.exe to install, then delete the folder where you extracted all the stuff to save space. Oblivion has an old DX version packed with it, so installing the new one does not hurt, and might solve the issue. Or not.

Sounds odd. The vanilla game should work. Sure it is a Bethesda game, but still... :psyduck:

yeah, re-creating the ini made the game actually start up this time, however my "weak" 860 apparently defaults to medum. apparently.

now to install mods one by one and see what makes it crash, however, im just hoping it was the ini making things crash

Great. Hopefully it was the ini. The game does not necessarily recognise new hardware, for example I myself have an R9 290 from AMD, and it defaults to medium. The game is so old they probably had no idea about the GPU power available these days.

If you run into other issues, just post them here in this thread. Maybe I can help, maybe I can not. Only one way to find out. :)
