keeping mods up to date?

You need to systematically check for updates yourself by clicking on the link provided in the "version" tab on NMM.

Then you should see if an update for the respective mod is available. Disable the mod which is about to be updated, and download the new version and activate that. While it is possible to overwrite, it is not recommended. It's also not a bad idea to keep previous versions in the list for a while in case the newest version has some bugs which the previous did not. I tend to keep them there for around a month before deleting them outright.

I don't know if it is true if the next version of NMM will auto-update mods (I'm not saying it won't, but I have not heard about this), but I don't think this is a good idea. Autoupdating mods can lead to all kinds of trouble if the user doesn't know what the new update entails, or what is being changed/removed/edited in the new version. I recommend manual updates all the way.

Auto updating mods? Like so many people think auto updating the game is such a popular and acceptable thing. Personally I prefer that mods not auto update. Like RaffTheSweetling, I like to update them myself after I see what the update offers. Sure sometimes it can take a little bit of time and work but I still prefer it over having the mod updates just auto install.
