HeX16
Barely based on an adware problem as much of i "I am raging because skyrim requires a download"Which isnt the case as many above have said. If you really give up so quickly and go back to Oblivion which can take like 3hours just to reinstall my mods... I fail to see the logic
Thandal
Meh... lots of people think Steam, Origin, pick-your-publisher-digital-download-channel is adware. In this case though, no such registry entiries on my rig, so there was something else going on here. (And yes, the OP also made the topic that Moikko linked above, so obviously doesn't like Skyrim at all. )

I am surprised as to how many people are living in the dark ages. Steam is the way to go now. It is easy, and in ten years, when my disc is scratched or lost, and I have changed computers five or six times, I will still have my game secured safely on Steam. Another thing of note, I'll take Steam over Securom ANY DAY of the week. Lastly, concerning this thread, I have had Steam for over seven years now, and NOT ONCE, EVER, have I received any adware or spyware from that account. Spirit0f64
Okay...here's the report. btw, my first post is directed at the fact that Steam had to be installed BEFORE I could install the game. I'm not one that appreciates having to use 3rd party software. When I buy a game, it's nice to be able to sit down and load the game without having 3rd party interference. Here are the results of the system test:After uninstalling Steam, the adware was not present. After re-installing Steam, the adware WAS present. Before anyone says anything, please permit me to explain a few things...I have been working with computers since the days of my Atari 8k. I have written many of my own programs in the past and created my own websites using HTML. All that aside, I make no claims to being a "genius" or "wizard" when it comes to computers. Every system I build teaches me something new and whenever people ask me what I know about computers, my answer is always "not much". Also, I live alone so there is no one else that has access to my systems. As far as browsing, this is the only site I have been on this morning as I am watching this discussion. I want to be 100% sure about this. Another thing to bear in mind is that not all spyware programs are created equal. For example, I run as many as three different spyware programs and there always seems to be one that will find something the other two missed. The program that originally found the problem was Spybot-Search & Destroy. A program that I have come to know and trust over the years as it has proved to be the most reliable. Here's what I found: After re-installing the software (Steam), the entry for W3i.IQ5.fraud was found to be present. I have internet security set to medium-high so this seemed strange since even the Nexus sites won't allow me to download without first telling the computer it's okay to do so. The problem is coming from a cookie that gets installed when Steam is installed. Whether or not the cookie is known to the Steam developers is unknown as I have no way of finding out. When increasing my security on cookies, the problem ceases and the adware does not show up after running diagnostics. If you're not finding it, then I would say that your security features are high enough to block it. That's a good thing.
Spirit0f64
Forgot! I tried installing Skyrim again (3rd attempt) and it seems to be okay...guess the third time's a charm or the increased security did something to permit installation from the DVD? Don't know. I'll blame it on gremlins! :nuke:
PrincessOfFlorin
Goblin Girl: That price includes the hardcover Prima Game Guide...the game was $60, the guide $30 (including shipping)You still overpaid by $20 to $25 bucks.
Uzibeatle
Shrug. Been using Steam here for years. No adware other than sometimes annoying Steam popups ALL OF WHICH can be controlled via Steam settings. Steam doesn't even have to launch at boot, if you so not wish it to do so. One of the best behaved apps of that sort on this system. Whatever your problem is or was it was a result of something else.
scot
I don´t understand how steam downloads the game when you have the disk, I bought the DVD insert it on my computer and steam asked for the serial key, I put my serial key and then it installed in 3 minutes, then it downloaded the update wich took seconds.Even though I hate steam I never had problems nor pop ups nor anything, I allways use it with offline mode. Also steam was hacked not long ago, is it possible that something that doesn´t belong to steam is still there? ajohnson07
No. Just No. You got hit with a drive by exploit, likely because you haven't updated Java, or you're still running XP. Many of these Malware apps don't even start up until you connect and use the internet anyway. Install MSE and do a *full* scan. Get rid of that Spybot trash. I'm sure you'll find you are still infected.
