Dreadarm
LOL "CHAN! The desktop"? lol what I "CHAN" to the desktop allot when im over encumbered or have certain items in my inventory, try going to town and dropping of anything that is non-essential and then go back and try again. also... if you have a 64 bit machine and atleast 4 gigs of ram install the 4gig extender mod for the Skyrim exe, this fixes most CTD issues. 4 Gig enabler
Tropxe
If it always happens there even after restarting Skyrim, I would advise putting all graphic settings on minimum and trying again. Sometimes putting the graphics on minimum can be a sort of "safe-mode" for games when they're being buggy like this. If that doesn't help, carry on with the game and do other quests, then go back there later on. Sometimes crashes can be caused by the current state of your game, so progressing in the game can change things and make it work.

Tropxe
Just google for "4gb ram patch". However, I've heard people who really know their stuff about programming, and game programming in particular, say that it's actually pointless. It would work for general applications in some cases, but for a game all it will do is "allow" it to use more than 2GB, but the game never will because it's hardcoded to only use 2GB, it simply will never allocate anything to the additional RAM. Test it for yourself, patch the exe and then check with Task Manager periodically to see if Skyrim ever uses more than 2GB.
Dreadarm
Dreadarm where can i get this 4 gig extender mod? ozi I am sorry the last bit was ment to be a link but it did not paste properly here is the link http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=134 there is one more thing you will need to do to allow a larger memory alocation open your skyrim.ini and make the changes to the following section adding the things that are not there. the ini is located in your mydocuments/games/skyrim folder. [Papyrus]fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=500.0bEnableLogging=0bEnableTrace=0bLoadDebugInformation=0iMinMemoryPageSize=100000iMaxMemoryPageSize=5000000iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=1800000000 (don't forget to kudos if it works for you.) One last thing If you use an ATI card they just released new drivers with updated profiles. Well, since your friends are such experts, I would hate to disappoint you but I HAVE used the patch and it HAS eliminated the ctd's and does in fact allow more memory for use, you have to remember there is more memory than what you see in the task manager, you have video memory to consider and other such things like paging files and so forth. Tropxe
No, the patch is to use more than 4GB of RAM, not "other types". You'll never see more than 2GB being used, and if you have, I'd like to see a screencap. I kept getting crashes even when using it, it seems like any apparent elimination of the crashes is simply down to luck. A program won't crash when it reaches its RAM limit, it simply empties older addresses and writes there, that's why not having enough RAM can slow it down. In fact, using more RAM than is expected (not that this method allows that) will actually lead to crashes since it may write to RAM that Windows doesn't expect it to write to, RAM being used by another process. The point of it all is, all this does is let 32-bit exes use PAE, but if the game coding itself isn't ever going to write to more than 2GB of RAM, it doesn't matter what the exe itself is now free to do. I'd honestly like to be proven wrong on this, but since I've heard this from various sources, both people online and on programming and tech websites, I've been checking Skyrim and it's never using more than 2GB. By the way, on my PC right now Skyrim is using 800MB of memory and I've been playing for hours and hours.
