I've tried playing a mage and been in the same situation, spells do practically nothing in damage versus their mana cost. you run out of mana and you're left scraping the barrel in the same situation, my warrior just runs in and annihilates one of the enemies right away with a jumping strike. i can cut down the rest with normal swings pretty easy. a greatsword is hands down better than magic mage is hardmode.
