The companion AI is terrible :(

Just wondering if everyone feels the same way here. I'm getting quite annoyed at the AI of follower NPCs. there's been quite a few quests (which i won't mention in too much detail to avoid spoilers)

Where i have to go through a dungeon with one or two NPCs following. A few of the companion quests come to mind.

I'm noticing a perpetual problem in these, that my npc has a habit of getting "lost". sometimes they get stuck on a bit of scenery, or sometimes their brain just shuts down and they stop moving until i talk to them/hit them/shove them around a bit. This has happened to me at least 5 times during quests that i can recall, and it happens constantly to lydia as we're running about the wilderness together.

In the heat of battle i tend not to notice this and keep going. it's only 10 minutes later when i come to the boss room and find i'm not allowed to enter without aela or whoever, and i end up trudging back through the dungeon looking for them. it's a bloody nightmare >.<

These things really need better scripting. Even if it comes at the cost of immersion, i think having things work properly should be most important. I'm wondering why bethesda didn't just use the tried and tested solution of followers teleporting to you if they get too far away. surely relying on pathfinding alone is insane, in an open-world game with such varied terrain.

These problems occur with companion scripts and AI in the earlier Bethesda games as well, and I'm gonna guess that the scripting in Skyrim isn't too much more advanced since the engine appears so similar. Even with community-made companion systems that teams of modders strove to perfect (CM Partners, RR Companion Vault, NCCS) such AI problems are still present because they could only do so much with what the devs gave them. I'd wager that unless they start making these games MMO we'll always find things less than perfect with our companions.

It's not 100% AI problems but more pathing nodes missing. With a gameworld like Skyrim has, which pushes the player to explore behind rocks and whatnot, the AI has to follow possible paths, which often don't go over rocks or steep terrain.

Try staying on "normal terrain" (roads, flats, etc) and avoid going over rocks, then the follower will come no problemo. Likewise in dungeons, do not jump down in a room or something, just go normally.

That said, there are a couple places in dungeons where the AI will become stuck because there are no pathing possible. Had one in a

Falmer

dungeon and Eoal would just NOT be able to leave the platform, even using commands. Had to manually push her for a minute or two. Other than that, my follower is pretty responsive.

I'd LOVE a set of hotkeys for follower commands though!

Anyway, it's a problem for sure and doesn't encourage having followers. Maybe they'll release some patches that puts a newly baked land with better pathing nodes, but I doubt it.
