J3X
If you play some big monster mod you need a companion to survive.
Sypron
Realistically, if you have a companion you would be splitting all the spoils with them. If you want to make it seem less "cheaty" at the end of your dungeon raid just ditch half the loot.
Faivon
Hmm, yeah... I feel like I need to install a companion mod. I have Francesco and MMM mods installed on my Oblivion and I ran into a dozens of Goblins... I even have the reduced reduced spawn rate mod enabled! But what about Vanilla Oblivion? Would you still use Companion mod?
bben46
Personally, I think companions just get in the way during combat. But I like to keep them around my house mods just for the eye candy. I sometimes call a companion after a major battle to renew my magical equipment. Its quicker than leaving a site to go to a Mages guild. And I have long since used up the Varla Stones. ninja_lord666
It's only cheating if you think it is. If you're fine with a companion, who cares what everyone else thinks!? Don't ask other people to define your meanings.
Pujangga
I've just noticed this thread  Mmmkay, for me, companion mod is not cheating. You can tell him/her to wait in an inn (or even your house), right? As for myself, I will use companion for... making stories
Jumonji
Well, I'm obviously biased since I've spent months coding Rhianna and Rhianna II (not yet released.) But I think having a "good" companion really adds to the immersion in the game. When I try adventuring solo now, I feel lonely. In terms of "cheating", well it depends. Is it cheating if you turn down the difficulty slider? It's up to you to balance the game however you want, and this goes double ifyou use mods. It's a single-player game, so mix and match whatever mods and difficulty level makes it most fun for you. That's all that matters. -Jumonji
Herolegend
No definitely not cheating, like in never winter nights you need a companion to balance the game out, otherwise it would be pretty hard for some people unless your a good player like me ;) , well as for this game use Valeria Reborn still not considered cheating even though she kicks ass and resurrects you like once, i put the difficulty up past mid and it balances the game out she cant kill them all solo and you can help her :) i think i would consider a cheat if you take more than 3 companions with you at one time, i only take 1 or 2 , no more, otherwise even max difficulty the game is easier. just remember companions>enemies>difficulty just do some easy math figure out whats best for your skill level for balanced games not too uber hard unless your into that, not too easy, hence balance. Don't ask other people to define your meanings. Well, I did ask everyone what they think .. Uhmm, yeah .. I kinda forgot to mention that let's say the difficulty slider is at middle which is the default difficulty and whether you install some big monster mod is kinda depending on how you want the game to be.I always stick with mid difficulty slider and I can handle vanilla oblivion on my own but after I installed MMM and Francesco's mod, the usual desolate mine is usually guarded by 2 or 3 goblins outside of the mine ... now with mmm and francesco's mod, it has 7 goblins! I even use MMM's reduced reduced spawn rate ...
Malchik
If you are playing a levelled mod you will probably have to rethink the way you play the game. In vanilla Oblivion levelling up could be disastrous until you knew how to control the speed of levelling so your attack and defence skills kept pace with the monsters. If the game is levelled you need to adopt the Morrowind approach and level as quickly as possible (using the main offensive and defensive techiques you prefer as major skills). Some areas of the game need to be approached at much higher levels than before. It is very easy to put your own companion into the game. Whether this distorts the game significantly depends on how you make the character. If he/she has 20000 health points and every stat maximised, yeah that probably is cheating. Why bother to play the game if you can never lose? If the companion is fairly drawn I cannot see it is cheating. After all you can co-op the Jermane Brothers and Martin and Jauffre into being helpers if you choose. Also companions are added when you become Archmage, Listener of the Dark Brotherhood and owner of the new castle mod. If your chosen companion - whether created by you or added via another's mod - seems too strong to be realistic, use the console to lower the companion's stats.
