How to increase Cogsworth's affinity?

I'm trying to max out Cogsworth's affinity as soon as possible so I can dump him, since he's the least useful in combat. But everything I do seems to make him like me less and less.

I know he likes generous behavior. But when Preston sent me to a mole rat infested area to build up a radio beacon, Cogsworth seemed excited to accompany me there. But he seemed to like even less after the fact.

I know he dislikes when I act violently or selfishly. So ... did I lose affinity when I killed the mole rats in front of him?

Are there any quests I can do to grind up my affinity for him without putting myself in harm's way?

Can I make a profit upgrading weapons and armor using metals I've scrapped from nearby environments?

Also, this is my second time playing through. The first time, I stopped after about two hours because I realized I didn't have a clue what I was doing. This is my second playthrough ... where I've figured out the basics of how the game works.

I say that to say this: I can't seem to find any merchants to trade anything with? I found a doctor - an old lady - shortly after getting my first set of power armor from the Minutemen, and I found some other old lady at a truck stop who was willing to trade with me once i disposed of some raiders holding her up. But I can't find these people on my second playthrough.

the diner is due west of starlight drive in. Mrs Abernathy at the Abernathy farm is a trader. Carla a traveling trader will show up in sanctuary as well. Carla travels between the diner and Sanctuary. Selling weapons is the primary income for most of my characters starting out upgrading them brings in more caps and you can also sell the mods that have been replaced
