TheMastersSon
Still, if iNumHavokThreads makes a difference, then Alenet missed something. This was and is my only point. It would be helpful imo to not state info as definitive when it's not, or claim knowledge of source code when they haven't seen it etc. One can't even begin to make definitive claims without testing on all hardware and OS platforms. So it's certain that Alenet "missed" quite a bit imo.
shademe
Looking at the code, the engine does create as many threads as the iNumHavokThreads INI setting (upper limit=6).
TheMastersSon
Thanks for the info. We spent years looking at spastic deer and combat until this change. :)
TheMastersSon
After a decade, would it be possible to get a definitive answer like shademe's to the entire list of variables in oblivion.ini? If not a detailed explanation, at least a list of which variables are used by the game and which aren't, would be extremely helpful and imo interesting. I'm most curious about the OpenMP settings, which despite claims made in tweak guides seem to make a difference on our system. Also things like, what exactly is the difference between bUseHardDriveCache=0 and 1. Disk caching in an OS function, so what exactly does this setting do? Oblivion is rock solid during long sessions with disk caching turned off, but eventually crashes with it turned on. Why? Etc. I've run across many similar questions and debates about other variables, all owing to the fact that nobody knows for sure how (or in many cases even whether) the game makes use of these settings.
