Hamstergeddon1
Hey everyone, I'm just getting started in the modding scene. Making a weapon probably isn't the best place to start, as I have been searching the forums and all the posts about it are pretty old. My main problem is deciding on a program to use. I started the Blender: Noob to Pro book a little while back with Blender 2.77, but I just found out that it doesn't support nif files. Does this matter? Is there a workaround, or should I just go to Blender 2.49, and scrounge around for plugins and tutorials for that version? There's also 3ds Max. I'm a student, so I could get that, but is there a nif plugin for that? From the searching I've done, I need to make a mesh for the weapon with the major pieces separated. I'm not too sure what this means, but I'm assuming I should find the weapon that most closely resembles what I want to make, and try and make a piece on my gun for every piece of the similar gun, right? Then each piece needs its UV map and Normal map. After that it's all the NifSkope stuff, but I can worry about that after I make my model. So the gist is I make a mesh with UV/Normal maps that resembles an existing gun so that animations and stuff can line up with the new gun (I want to use the Alien Blaster by the way, because of the side loaded fusion cell). Can you guys help me pick a modeling software? I've got all Summer for this, and I don't want to give up. I appreciate any help!
blackrat99
It's a long time since I used those programs so this is general and could be out of date. For later Blender versions, you should be able to export a model as a .3ds file, import it into Blender 2.49 and then export the .nif from there. There is a .nif plugin for earlier versions of 3ds Max but there was no plugin for later versions last time I was doing this stuff. I recommend you head over to the niftools site and see what the latest position is. 3ds Max is a much easier program to learn than Blender 2.49 but I don't know what the latest Blender is like so can't compare them. The real problem with 3ds Max is getting hold of one of those older versions.
