Playing it slow

Since I got Skyrim I was much impressed with the beauty and detail of the world (though it could definitely use some hi-res mods for us with high end PCs, and even more detail! My framerate is too smooth I need to slow it down lol), and try my best not to fast travel. I also like to just spend a few ingame days, going out, hunting a few deer... and mammoths, and even a few dragons, or going out to mine some ore to make better armor. Each time, there seems to be something going on, whether a thief runs past you and expects you to help him, or a skooma dealer, or a hunter comes up and begs you for a potion because there's a nearby cave with vampires in it. A simply hunting/mining trip ends up still being an adventure.

And there is beauty in Skyrim, whether the auroras at night in the northern part of Skyrim, or just travelling on foot from Whiterun to Markath to get some more gold/iron ore - and seeing a gorgeous structure on the other side of the river with a waterfall running through it. Or visiting a mill, then I go off for a cig while my ingame character is chopping firewood lol. These things can be easily missed with fast travel. So who else disciplines themselves to never fast travel?

Only time I would probably let myself go is climbing up and down freakin' High Hrothgar!

I feel exactly the same..my first character was bit of a rush, where i just stormed everything and moved forward....after getting to lvl 30 i realized this isnt how i wanted to play(i was just eager to see everything, but luckyly i didnt explored as much), so i deleted her, made a new character and playing really slowly now.

Im enjoying the beuty of this game to full and fast travel is a "no way" to me now.

The thing is, certain quests are almost designed around fast travel, like the thieves guild jobs that are basically "go across the whole of Skyrim, click on something once, then come back". But yes, in general I think it's a better idea not to fast travel, or else you may as well just be playing a game where there's no open world, just a small central hub where you can teleport to towns and dungeons.

Most of the quest are done that way, but its great not to use fast travel becouse thats where the radiant story system kicks in as OP said...many things happen and that makes skyrim feel so full of life.

I walked up there too. :) I play the game mostly for RPing. I hid in cave when the night started and kept me warm with some fire spells. ^^

But i do fast travel sometimes. Like Tropxe said, some quests don't feel right without fast travel. For example: Going to the Grey Beards the first time: I walk. But since you have to go up there so often it gets silly so I fast travel there which keeps up the atmo for me.

It depends how you've been playing it in general. I'm 90 hours in nearly, and in terms of the main story, I've just left High Hrothgar after going there for the first time. I've done two Companions quests and have just joined the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood but have done no main quests for them. So when I'm trying to get things moving again and just do a quest or two for either of them, I don't want to spend about 3 hours going across the world map and getting even more sidetracked, I just need to pull myself together and actually get the game moving again! :)
