Everything is plastic.

Anyone else feel like Bethesda's overly liberal use of specular power makes some things in the game look very plastic?

Has anyone thought of doing something about this (or already done something about it), and if not would this be a much wanted mod?

No, not at all.

Cant say that Ive ever seen rough wooden planks shine like theyve been covered in lip gloss though

Certain materials in the game look unusually glossy, regardless what mods I install

Looking through the material files, many objects seem to have very high specular power (gloss) compared to others

Its most noticeable in lighter conditions, especially lamp light (not daylight), best seen on the objects in the loading screen

Common with weapons and NPCs (actors)

Hard to miss if you dont pay attention to the tiny details

Please forgive Team Pork Rinds, he's not used to contributing helpfully to a discussion.

Anyway, I recommend using ENB presets to see if that addresses your problem, as I think it probably is less the textures themselves to blame and more your particular combination of graphic settings and textures. Maybe. That's honestly a stab in the dark.

Thank you very much for saving the day then. *bows to Ms. Katie*

Nope, Ive had an ENB from the beginning

Tweaking the bgsm files does the trick though, many of them have proper specular power values, but many of them also have the default value, which apparently is pretty high

E.G. a bgsm file for hair A might have specular power 0.13, but a bgsm file for hair B suddenly has a specular power of 1.00, despite using the same specular map, resulting in a plastic look for hair B

You dont notice it on most things because they have very weak specular maps or no specular maps at all

But the ones that have decent specular maps, yep. looks like plastic.

I should add though, the effect does get more apparent with different lighting

Have you reinstalled meshes? Since I can't say I have the same problem, and neither has Team Piggly Wiggly, I can only assume something locally on your end is causing the issue. Do you run any retex mods at the moment?

It's called troubleshooting, my dear.
